If you’ve been carrying a two-handed greatsword in Oblivion Remastered, reminiscing about the old days as a knight adorned in grubby, scamp-infested armor, but found that something just didn’t feel quite right, rest assured, you’re not the only one experiencing this sensation.
User Gonarhxus shared the same sentiment, so they fired up the original game and began practicing on a training dummy. They noticed that two-handed weapons are significantly slower in the remaster, and to back this up, they provided a side-by-side comparison over at r/ElderScrolls.
It’s quite apparent that I find the Dai-Katana to be my preferred choice, yet I’ve taken time to evaluate both the Ebony Claymore and Volendrung as well, and they seem significantly slower in comparison.
It’s important to mention that Oblivion is an extremely old video game. If you attempt to run it at more than 60 frames per second on a contemporary gaming setup, it can cause issues with the game speed. This results in weapons moving significantly faster than they should in-game. Consequently, the video provided below might not accurately depict the change, but keep in mind that u/Gonarhxus restricted their frames-per-second in another test and observed that two-handed weapons are “still perceptibly slower” in the remastered version.
“The Range Is Also Reduced”
It’s true that not all people are dissatisfied with the change. Just as a hefty weapon feels heavy, it follows logically. Some even pointed out in the comments that one of the main criticisms of Oblivion was its floaty and weightless combat, and this seems to be an intentional adjustment by Virtuos to address that issue. However, it does lead to a situation where two-handed weapons appear less powerful compared to other equipment.

One simple approach was proposed by u/Gonarhxus: increasing the Defense Power Score (DPS) and improving the speed of blocking would make the gameplay smoother. This idea has been shared by many others, considering that when using two-handed weapons, you can’t use a shield, leaving you exposed during a slight delay after each swing, making you highly vulnerable.
Players are yet to see the game’s initial update, so it could take some time before Virtuos tackles the criticism regarding two-handed weapons, if they choose to do so at all. For now, opting for a one-handed weapon combined with a shield seems more advantageous, as it enables blocking and inflicts significantly higher damage.
