As a gamer, I’d put it this way: Just like how Raichu evolves from Pikachu, or a butterfly breaks free from its chrysalis, Grandma Shirley Curry has transformed into an even more powerful version of herself – Oblivion Grandma, the Grandma Remastered. Now, she’s traipsing across Cyrodiil with youthful vigor!
Since 2010, I’ve been an active member of the Skyrim YouTube community, known as Curry. Born in 1936, I’ve been consistently uploading roleplaying-focused Skyrim videos, earning recognition from Bethesda themselves along the way. Despite occasional pauses and setbacks, my passion for this game has remained steadfast. Recently, I’ve found myself exploring new territories, like facing conjurers, voicing concerns about UE5, and rediscovering the charm of Oblivion, much like I did in 2006 when Curry was just turning 70.
The streamer currently has two videos titled “Learning” and “Still Learning” uploaded. They express admiration for the remaster’s beauty while also pointing out differences from Skyrim, which they find confusing. For instance, pressing F now puts weapons away instead of R as it used to, which frustrates them: “I wish games would stick with traditional controls and keep them consistent across different titles.” They also find the movement in TES 4 unappealing, describing it as “absolutely awkward”.
However, Curry becomes more engrossed in the game over time, captivated by its stunning visuals. Having spent much of her youth exploring the original Oblivion, revisiting it now through the lens of someone deeply immersed in Skyrim is quite enjoyable for her. She spends a lot of time photographing the exterior of the Imperial City.
Nevertheless, I’m curious as to how long the Skyrim Grandma will continue playing Oblivion. In Curry’s second video, she explores one of the game’s countless caves, which might not be the optimal choice if the goal is to persuade the Skyrim Grandma to switch to a different game.
The place is dim, has a rich brown hue, and seems like a maze; I suspect that Curry’s least enjoyable moment in the game comes when she must confront the enigmatic and captivating puzzle known as Oblivion’s lock-pick system, emitting an audible sound of frustration while trying to understand it before ultimately conceding and choosing auto-resolve (I feel you, grandma). If only someone could share with her the secret technique for cheesing Oblivion’s lock-picking mechanism.
I truly wish she continues her journey, and not just that, but falls deeply in love with Cyrodiil. Perhaps this affection will ignite a spark within her to explore Morrowind as well. If so, we might just see the first adventurer from the Morrow-Silent Generation, whom I’d like to call the “Morrowboomer”.
