The 16th season of Overwatch 2 has generated a lot of buzz due to the introduction of its latest damage hero, Freja. Additionally, the game has partnered with Street Fighter 6 for a unique collaboration. A new competitive mode called Stadium, which is played in a 5v5 format and follows a best-of-7 structure, has also been introduced in Overwatch 2. Even though it’s still in its inaugural season, Stadium is already undergoing swift changes. For example, Freja was added to the expanding roster of currently 18 heroes during the mid-season update, and adjustments have been made promptly and effectively to maintain balance within the game.
As a devoted Overwatch 2 enthusiast, I can’t help but get excited about the future of Stadium mode. Blizzard has given us a sneak peek into what we can expect in the upcoming seasons, and it’s promising! We’re looking forward to seeing heroes like Sigma, Junkrat, and Sojourn join the fray, along with new consumables, saved builds, and more. However, the community is already buzzing with anticipation, sharing their wish lists for the maps they’d love to see added to Stadium.
Maps That Would Work Well in Overwatch 2’s Fast-Paced Stadium Mode
New Queen Street
In Stadium mode, you’ll find three Push maps currently available: Colosseo, Place Lacroix, and Redwood Dam. Despite the debates surrounding Push mode, similar to the ongoing discussion about Overwatch 2’s Clash, it seems to function well in the compact environment that Stadium provides due to its tug-of-war format. Esperanca is scheduled to enter the map rotation during Season 17, and some fans have expressed interest in seeing New Queen Street added as well. Colosseo is often perceived as more favorable for poke strategies due to its long corridors, but this has been mitigated somewhat by adjusting points to accommodate Stadium’s faster pace. On the other hand, Esperanca and New Queen Street are generally preferred for brawl or dive team compositions, making for some intriguing matchups when paired with Stadium’s tankier or scaling builds.
Midtown

In simpler terms, it would be great if a mix of Control (like Midtown) and Payload maps were introduced into the game sooner, rather than later in Season 15, because so far, no Payload maps have been included. By Season 18, when Stadium’s Payload Race mode is launched, they could add variations of Route 66 and King’s Row to it. Although Midtown isn’t traditionally a Payload map, the second and third points could be separated to fit Stadium’s format. This change might help address player issues about capturing the first point quickly, as the later segments of the map are generally well-liked.
Talantis

As someone who’s eager for more, I believe Overwatch 2‘s Talantis map deserves a second chance to dazzle us. Crafted live during a 2022 Twitch stream by Art Director Dion Rogers as a Control map with community input, this underwater wonderland offers a thrilling array of Jump Pads, deadly traps, and floating platforms. Given its abundance of environmental perils, a fully realized Talantis map could seamlessly blend into the organized pandemonium of Stadium. In fact, some players have been vocal about their desire to see Talantis return in some form or another, and I’m one of them.
Antarctic Peninsula

At present, the Control maps for Stadium feature Arena Victoriae, Ilios Ruins, Gogadoro, and Nepal Shrine. Fans are eagerly anticipating Samoa’s arrival in Season 17, while some hope the Antarctic Peninsula might be introduced in Season 19 or later. The Antarctic Peninsula was introduced in Overwatch 2 Season 3 and has since been warmly accepted due to its fishing spots, penguins, and abundance of high ground control points. Potential maps that could complement Stadium include Icebreaker, Sublevel, and even Labs, which could also be a suitable addition.
