In upcoming updates, The Elder Scrolls Online is set to introduce more challenging story material since Zenimax is currently developing missions specifically tailored towards experienced players. This change comes in response to fan feedback over the past few years, who have expressed a desire for the team to cease producing easy content.
The team behind ESO is planning to make upcoming game content more challenging, following feedback from fans. Although details are yet to be finalized, the lead of a zone, named Jason Barnes, has hinted at an increase in difficulty for the game moving forward.
Elder Scrolls Online story content will be more difficult
In a recent Q&A session, Barnes shared that they have future intentions to develop challenging new narrative content for ESO. Previously, the main story content in ESO was kept relatively simple so that players could begin their characters from any expansion without encountering excessive difficulty.
Barnes hinted at potential enhancements where difficulty levels might be introduced for those eager to explore the game’s fresh narratives without effortlessly overpowering enemies. Alternatively, the game could instead make story content more challenging by design, but this approach contradicts the game’s structure that lets players dive into whichever expansion they prefer at their starting point.
Regarding the talks about increasing the complexity of story content, Barnes shared: “Indeed, there are plans underway for this, and it’s a project in progress. However, we’re not prepared to share details just yet. We have admitted publicly that we’re considering this, and work is being done on it. I’ll stop there for now.
For the remainder of 2025, The Elder Scrolls Online is brimming with ambitious plans. Coming up next month is the debut of Seasons of the Worm Cult Part 1 update, while Part 2, scheduled for Q4 2025, will introduce a fresh Zone Expansion complete with a concluding storyline, new equipment, dungeons, and a host of additional features.
In its initial release, the Seasons of the Worm Cult updates carry forward a narrative started in the core game of ESO. The first part of these updates furthermore introduces subclassing, enabling players to trade two class Skill Lines with abilities from different classes.
