In a new Netflix adaptation of the cherished tale, The Chronicles of Narnia, Director Greta Gerwig is leading fans on a journey through the wardrobe once more. However, Mark Johnson, the original trilogy’s producer, seems to harbor some reservations about the reboot and appears somewhat apprehensive about Gerwig’s approach. Nevertheless, with films like Barbie and Little Women in her portfolio, the esteemed screenwriter is set to bring a unique perspective to the classic book and film, and if it manages to be as impressive as her past works, Johnson’s doubts will undoubtedly be laid to rest permanently.
First penned by author C.S. Lewis during the 1950s, “The Chronicles of Narnia” is a captivating tale set in the fantastical land of Narnia, an enchanted realm teeming with magic, mythical creatures, and sentient animals. The narrative also follows a group of children who discover the secrets and tales of this magical world by stepping through a mystical wardrobe and exploring its captivating landscape. Excited fans of this classic portal fantasy can now look forward to Netflix’s adaptation as production is set to commence next month in July. Rumors have circulated about pop star Charli XCX possibly playing the White Witch, but it appears that “Sex Education” actress Emma Mackey has been offered the role instead.
The Chronicles of Narnia Producer Has Concerns About Gerwig’s Direction of Reboot

During an interview with Deadline, producer Mark Johnson, known for projects such as Rain Man, The Holiday, and the original Chronicles of Narnia trilogy, was asked about Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Narnia reboot. Interestingly, Johnson shared that he found the idea intriguing but admitted that he is unsure about the specific concept for the film that Gerwig has in mind. As a fan of her work, he expressed curiosity while also acknowledging some uncertainty.
As a die-hard fan, I’m absolutely thrilled! I can hardly contain my excitement to witness her upcoming performance… Frankly, I’m a bit puzzled as to what she’s working on. Is it “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” a role we all adored in our youth, or is it something entirely new? Could it possibly be a blend of both? I can hardly wait to find out!
Despite some initial uncertainty, Johnson did express his enthusiasm for the upcoming movie, stating he’s eager to observe the outcome of Greta Gerwig’s role in the project. He admitted, “I don’t know much about it, and I’m not competitive about it… I can hardly wait to see it, because whatever she does is bound to be exceptional, and I have no doubt, it will be strikingly different from what we previously created.” Although Johnson seems puzzled about Gerwig’s direction for the Narnia adaptation, Variety has reported that she will be adapting the sixth novel of the series, The Magician’s Nephew, which heavily features the White Witch character.
Unlike previous adaptations of Narnia that played in theaters, this new reboot is not planned for a full theatrical release but will instead stream on Netflix. However, to give fans an opportunity to see it on the big screen before streaming, there are plans to show it in IMAX cinemas for two weeks prior to its Netflix debut date. This way, viewers can catch Carey Mulligan as Digory’s mother, Daniel Craig as Digory’s uncle, and Meryl Streep as lion Aslan the Great on the big screen for a brief period.
