One LEGO Game Deserves New Life on the Switch 2

Since the debut of LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game in 2005 by Traveller’s Tales, their LEGO games have been popping up everywhere. They’ve adapted the idea to various franchises and even created a multiversal crossover experience with LEGO Dimensions. Although their licensed games have dominated, they also delved into original stories with 2013’s LEGO City Undercover. However, they haven’t done much more with this concept since then; but the potential release of Nintendo Switch 2 might spark renewed interest.

LEGO City Undercover, unlike anything Traveller’s Tales had previously produced, stood apart from LEGO’s numerous licensed themes. Instead, it immersed players in a world based on the LEGO City theme and spun an entirely new, original yarn about police officer Chase McCain. Despite not being the most expansive LEGO game, its offering was something genuinely distinctive. This unique experience has left many players yearning for a sequel for years, and the Switch 2 could be the ideal platform to finally bring it to life.

LEGO City Undercover Could Thrive on the Switch 2

LEGO City Was Born on Nintendo Consoles

A primary motivation to revisit LEGO City Undercover with the arrival of Switch 2 is its strong association with Nintendo. Unlike other significant Traveller’s Tales games, the original version was exclusively available on the Wii U a year after the console launched, and it was Nintendo that published this game, which sets it apart. Additionally, Traveller’s Tales produced a prequel spin-off for the Nintendo 3DS called LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins, and both games made excellent use of their respective systems’ unique capabilities.

The game “LEGO City Undercover” didn’t appear on other consoles until 2017, and at that time, a remastered version was released for various platforms including the Nintendo Switch. However, since then, there has been no update about a sequel, with both the Wii U version and its precursor being taken down from the Nintendo eShop. Despite Traveller’s Tales showing no signs of returning to the “LEGO City” concept, it would be great if someone did, especially with the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2.

The Switch 2 Could Take the Concept to Whole New Heights

The potential for the Nintendo Switch 2 lies in elevating the concept of “LEGO City Undercover” to unprecedented levels, as it aims to do with several of Nintendo’s flagship series. If given the opportunity, there’s still plenty of room for the studio to explore and develop this game further. The open world could be significantly expanded, additional LEGO themes could be integrated, and numerous other tales about Chase McCain could be spun. The remastered version suggests that the studio is at least intrigued by continuing it, so now it’s a matter of fully committing to the project.

If a follow-up to LEGO City Undercover isn’t produced, it would be ideal for the game to transition to the upcoming Switch 2 console. The Switch 2 could run the 2017 remaster of the game, but the studio might choose to re-release it alongside its prequel, which is exclusive to the 3DS. Furthermore, the studio could expand this universe and capitalize on the enhanced capabilities of the Switch 2’s powerful hardware, similar to how some Nintendo games are leveraging their advanced features.

Currently, the future of LEGO games is shrouded in uncertainty due to several factors. Previously exclusive license holder, Traveller’s Tales, hasn’t announced their next LEGO title yet. Additionally, multiple other studios are now developing their own versions of LEGO games, and even LEGO itself is establishing a new internal studio. Therefore, we can only speculate about the impact on players. However, it’s hopeful that one of these new studios will revive the concept of LEGO City Undercover, perhaps in a smaller format, as its unique idea merits continued existence.
