Today Is a Sad Day for XDefiant Fans

Summary

  • XDefiant will officially shut down today, June 3.
  • Servers will be taken offline permanently at some point today.
  • Refunds for any DLC purchases made from November 3 onwards should have already been issued.

On June 3rd, XDefiant enthusiasts will find themselves grappling with a sense of sorrow, as Ubisoft has decided to permanently terminate the game’s servers. Following a series of successful beta trials spanning throughout 2023, Ubisoft officially released XDefiant in May 2024. Despite some early hiccups with its network code, fans quickly nicknamed it the “Call of Duty” competitor. However, in December 2024, Ubisoft stunned players by announcing that they would be retiring XDefiant from service.

In the month of June 2024, mere weeks after its release, the game XDefiant astonishingly surpassed a significant milestone, making it Ubisoft’s quickest title to amass one million unique players. As stated by CEO Yves Guillemot, XDefiant managed to draw in an impressive 11 million players during its debut month, with the studio anticipating further growth following the launch of Season 1. However, whispers started swirling in August 2024 about the game’s uncertain future as its player count started to dwindle. Despite these rumors being repeatedly debunked by XDefiant’s executive producer, Mark Rubin, it appeared there was some truth to them, as it was announced in December 2024 that this shooter game would be terminated in June 2025.

XDefiant Servers Will Shut Down Today

After six months of anticipation, the day fans have been dreading has arrived: Ubisoft’s announcement that XDefiant would be shutting down is now a reality, and today, June 3, marks the end of the game. Ubisoft will turn off the servers at some point today, though the exact time hasn’t been disclosed yet. With this in mind, eager players should jump in and play while they still can. Unlike certain other games that offer an offline mode for continued play, XDefiant will be completely unplayable from June 3, 2025, as Ubisoft confirmed in their initial announcement. On a positive note, any DLC purchases made on November 3, 2024, should have been refunded by now.

In spite of the upcoming closure, Ubisoft rolled out the substantial Season 3 update for the game XDefiant. This final major content drop featured an abundance of fresh modes, factions, tweaks to gameplay, bug fixes, and a host of other enhancements. Originally intended for four seasons, the team at Ubisoft opted to combine two seasons’ worth of content into a single update. The patch introduced three new factions to the game, one of which drew inspiration from Assassin’s Creed, while another was based on the well-loved expansion of Far Cry 3 called Blood Dragon. Additionally, thirteen new maps were made available for players to explore, as nine of them had been slated for future seasons.

Despite strong performances from other Ubisoft games like “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” and “Rainbow Six Siege,” the company reported substantial losses during fiscal year 2024-2025, amounting to €159 million. This significant loss can be attributed to underperformers such as “Star Wars Outlaws” and “XDefiant.” Yet, Ubisoft enthusiasts have reasons to remain excited, as whispers persist about a potential new installment in the “The Crew” series and a long-awaited remake of “Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag.
