The following article contains spoilers for the Dragon Ball series.
Summary
- Dragon Ball Super and GT are both sequels to Dragon Ball, taking place at different points in the chronology.
- The Peaceful World Saga introduces new characters like Bulla, Pan, and Uub, expanding the Dragon Ball universe.
- Fans eagerly anticipate the return of Dragon Ball Super, with possibilities for future arcs, like a potential Sadala arc.
Following the conclusion of the original “Dragon Ball” manga in the 1990s, its universe has grown significantly. While numerous spin-offs have been published, only a handful have continued the main narrative. Initially, “Dragon Ball GT” served as a sequel, but it’s often disregarded as non-canonical by fans. However, “Dragon Ball Super,” written by Toyotaro under Akira Toriyama’s guidance (until March 2024), is generally recognized as the authentic continuation of the story.
Although GT and Super are not simultaneous events as they occur at different points in time, with Super starting a few years after the Majin Buu Saga ends but before the Peaceful World Saga – which serves as the original manga’s epilogue – it is still plausible for the events of the epilogue to remain consistent within this timeline.
Dragon Ball Z’s Peaceful World Saga
The Peaceful World Saga, often referred to as “The End of Z,” serves as the concluding chapter in the Dragon Ball manga (and the Dragon Ball Z anime). This saga unfolds a decade after the events of the Buu Saga, though it is closely linked and can be seen as an extension. However, Toei Animation may view it as a distinct arc due to the potential for numerous stories that could be woven between the Buu Saga and this one.
Apart from “Dragon Ball GT”, none of the Dragon Team series unfold after “The End of Z”. “Dragon Ball Daima” and “Dragon Ball Super” are set; “Daima” starts almost straight after the Buu Saga concludes, while “Super” occurs a few years later, prior to the Peaceful World Saga. Similarly, “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero” is expected to unfold just before the Peaceful World Saga begins.
In this tale, we meet Bulla, Trunks’s little sister; Pan, Gohan’s daughter; and the remarkable character, Uub – the reborn form of Kid Buu. Following a tournament where he battles Uub, Goku decides to mentor him, and they set off on an exciting new adventure together.
Does The Epilogue Still Make Sense In Dragon Ball?
In the finale of The End of Z, there are a handful of minor inconsistencies with Dragon Ball Daimao and Dragon Ball Super. For one example, in the initial ending, Goku and Vegeta haven’t crossed paths for five years – which is more time apart than what could realistically occur considering the events depicted in “Super: Super Hero”.
Beyond these minor discrepancies, neither “Super” nor “Daima” presents anything that directly contradicts the Peaceful World Saga. With some modifications, the saga could plausibly unfold post-“Dragon Ball Super,” preserving its core concept and paving the way for potential sequels.
When Will Dragon Ball Super Return?
Since March 2024, Dragon Ball Super has taken a break, with a short reappearance in February 2025. Fans were hoping for some exciting updates in honor of the series’ 10th anniversary, which falls in June. Regrettably, it appears that the festivities might not live up to expectations, as the show will continue its hiatus.
Toyotaro hinted that he’s working on future storylines for Dragon Ball Super, but since the passing of Akira Toriyama, there’s been some uncertainty about the direction of the series. Anything Toyotaro creates from now on may face criticism for not aligning with Toriyama’s vision, making it questionable as canon. As a result, many fans believe that the upcoming arc should be the last one and follow Toriyama’s original guidelines. However, it’s possible that Toriyama shared his ideas about how Dragon Ball Super should conclude with Toyotaro, so he may have content for multiple future arcs that Toriyama wanted to see in the series.
What Could Come Next: Sadala Planet
Many enthusiasts are hoping for the revival of Dragon Ball Super, with the Black Frieza arc being a popular choice. Yet, other scenarios could also materialize. A highly anticipated storyline might be the development of the Sadala arc. You see, Sadala is the original homeworld of the Saiyans, which was annihilated due to an internal war. Later, the Saiyans overthrew Planet Plant and renamed it Planet Vegeta. Interestingly, Sadala still exists in Universe 6 under the rule of King Sadala. A Saiyan named Cabba, who was introduced in Dragon Ball Heroes, resides there.
Fans are eager for additional information about the Saiyans, whether it’s another series, a continuation of Dragon Ball Super, a sequel, or something different. The inclusion of Planet Sadala, or at least Cabba, in Dragon Ball Super would undoubtedly excite fans. Since Frieza is a colonizer and conqueror, Sadala might be featured in a possible Black Frieza storyline. This could offer Vegeta the perfect opportunity to avenge the Saiyans for the harm Frieza has inflicted upon them.
Dragon Ball Super is available to read on MANGA Plus in English and Spanish.
