Summary
- Turbo Granny is the strongest spirit Momo and Okarun have faced so far.
- Season 2 introduces Evil Eye as a formidable foe, but not the strongest.
- Reiko Kashima is the feared yokai who cannot be defeated, setting up a thrilling rivalry.
The intriguing universe built by Dandadan revolves around creating memorable characters with impactful backstories that stick with the audience. While its main characters are crucial, the series wouldn’t be as engaging without its menacing yet amusing yokai and extraterrestrial antagonists. Each arc presents a fresh challenge for Momo and Okarun to overcome, which ultimately helps them grow into stronger versions of themselves. The success of this growth would not have been possible without the numerous supporting characters.
Out of all the spirits featured in the series, just a few have the power to significantly challenge the secondary protagonists. However, Dandadan Season 2 could introduce its most powerful yokai ever – one that even Seiko Ayase would find formidable.
Who is the Strongest Spirit in the Series?
Although Turbo Granny, Evil Eye, and Acrobatic Silky Are Powerful, They Are Not the Strongest Yokai
Previously noted, Momo and Okarun have encountered and courageously battled numerous formidable yokais, each possessing extraordinary, unusual powers. Notably, Turbo Granny stands out as the most powerful spirit yet encountered. Initially serving as the primary antagonist in the Turbo Granny storyline, this yokai has since proven to be an integral member of Momo’s team.
Besides introducing Turbo Granny in its first season, it also introduced Acrobatic Silky, a character representing the spirit of a single mother who tragically took her own life after losing custody of her daughter. Despite her remarkable strength, Okarun was able to overcome her with the assistance of Momo.
The Season 2 trailer offers glimpses of Okarun battling a menacing yokai named Evil Eye. This vicious and cruel spirit seeks retribution for past wrongs inflicted upon him. Despite his threatening presence, Evil Eye isn’t the most powerful spirit in the series. The upcoming season 2 of Dandadan promises to continue the storyline immediately from where season 1 ended, delving further into the supernatural escapades that Momo and her companions experience in Daija Town.
Although the exact number of episodes for the upcoming season remains unconfirmed, given the pattern from the last season, it seems that the creators have a penchant for ending episodes with suspenseful cliffhangers. Given that the second installment will encompass the Cursed House arc, Evil Eye arc, and Kaiju arc, it sets up an ideal scenario to end this chapter on another cliffhanger by introducing Reiko Kashimi, the most powerful spirit in the series.
Reiko Kashima: The Yokai Who Can’t Be Defeated
The Most Feared Spirit
- Manga Debut: Chapter 74, titled “Let’s Go to School”
In the tumultuous times of World War II, certain areas within Kamigoe City experienced relentless bombings, resulting in the tragic loss of countless innocent lives, one of whom was a young woman. Although details about her life are scarce, it’s hinted at in the manga that she had someone dear to her. Unfortunately, she suffered greatly during those dark days, eventually losing everything—even her own life. The immense hardship and agony she faced were beyond description, causing her spirit to become malevolent and eventually earning her the name Reiko Kashima.
Reiko is an unusual spirit, often found gazing at herself in her enchanted mirror. Her fascination with her reflection suggests a deep-rooted self-absorption that hints at personal turmoil she may not express openly. Moreover, she dislikes people who are adorable or attractive, as their charm triggers feelings of insecurity about her appearance. Instead, she prefers the grotesque and finds comfort in such things, boosting her self-confidence.
Living near the intriguing Kamigoe Ruins, which happen to be close to Momo and Okarun’s school, presents an unusual proximity. One eventful day, Momo elects to cut through the area for a quick route to school, unaware of the potential peril lurking ahead. It was during this journey that she crosses paths with Reiko Kashima. Though Momo is familiar with a charm intended to banish spirits, matters take a sinister turn when Kashima displays hostile behavior.
As Momo somehow outsmarts the yokai and makes it to school on time, Reiko – being a persistent spirit – doesn’t easily give up. Later, when Seiko becomes aware of the situation, she quickly comprehends its severity. To warn Momo about the danger she’s in, Seiko succinctly describes Kashima in one sentence.
“Do you know why those ruins have remained untouched? Because no one can defeat Reiko Kashima.”
In an instant, Momo will face a harrowing ordeal that challenges not just her abilities, but also her bravery. At the same time, Reiko relentlessly pursues Momo in search of vengeance, fueled by the girl’s disrespectful visit to the Kamigoe Ruins and deceit towards her. This ongoing feud may lead to outcomes that are shockingly unpredictable. Sadly, viewers eager to see how this story unfolds might need to be patient until Dandadan’s second season arrives.
