Fans of Stranger Things are eagerly anticipating season 5, but the wait has turned out to be longer than anticipated due to a writers’ strike in Hollywood in 2023 and the increased scale of the series. The Duffer brothers have crafted a larger production for the show’s return, which adds to the pressure on Stranger Things.

Regardless of how the fifth season may fare, there’s no denying the success of season 4. When it first aired in 2016, it was evident that viewers were in for a treat. As it transpired, season 4 demonstrated exactly why, as it became Netflix’s most acclaimed and popular original series, setting a new viewership record on their website and becoming the second most-watched English-language series on the platform. In June 2022 alone, Stranger Things garnered a whopping 7.2 billion minutes of streaming viewership in the U.S., following its premiere on May 27. However, even with such a monumental accomplishment under its belt, the luck of Stranger Things had to eventually come to an end at some point.

Adolescence Knocks Stranger Things Season 4 Netflix Record From the Top

Based on reports from Netflix’s Tudum, the unexpected hit psychological crime drama series “Adolescence” has dethroned “Stranger Things” season 4 from the number one spot on Netflix’s charts, pushing it down to second place. Despite this change, the popular series “Wednesday” continues to hold the top position on the platform. Premiering on March 13, 2025, the British production quickly gained massive popularity and amassed a staggering 141.2 million views, with viewers spending a total of 541.4 million hours watching it, and episode one was watched by 6.45 million people in its first week alone.

Titled “Adolescence” and crafted by Jack Thorne, renowned for “His Dark Materials” and the stage production of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child”, this series features Stephen Graham, a prominent Liverpudlian actor. The storyline centers around Katie (Emilia Holliday), a high school student who is viciously murdered by Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper), a 13-year-old classmate. Despite his arrest, Jamie maintains his innocence, even persuading his father (Stephen Graham) of his guilt. However, video evidence later surfaces that drastically alters the narrative of his story.

Regarding a potential second season of the intense drama series, it appears that Brad Pitt’s production company, Plan-B, is discussing possibilities for its continuation. In April, discussions between Plan B’s co-presidents, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner, and director Philip Barantini (of Adolescence) were reported, exploring the possibility of a second season. Though no official announcements have been made, if it does come to fruition, the storyline could delve into Jamie’s trial or the emotional aftermath experienced by Katie’s mother following her death.
