I’m thrilled to share that Disney has unveiled more intriguing details about the forthcoming Cars Land, set to open in the Frontierland district of Magic Kingdom a few years down the line. This fresh expansion draws inspiration from the 2014 movie, Planes: Fire & Rescue, as announced back in August 2024. Expect more updates in the coming months as construction kicks off this summer!
As per Disney’s announcement, this upcoming expansion at Magic Kingdom is set to be their largest ever. The new addition is named Piston Peak National Park, modeled after the fictional park of the same name seen in the movie. To facilitate construction, the Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat will all close as of July 7th. Disney also mentioned that the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, which is currently under renovation, is expected to reopen next year.
The Disney Parks Blog unveiled an artistic vision for Piston Peak National Park’s appearance. This themed area is being constructed using Parkitecture, a unique architectural style originated by the National Park Service designed to seamlessly integrate buildings with their natural surroundings. Unlike Cars Land in Disney California Adventure, Piston Peak National Park will act as a “natural divider,” separating Frontierland and Liberty Square in a distinct manner.
What’s in Store for Piston Peak National Park
Disney Experiences is taking an audacious step by planning to establish a National Park within one of its existing parks. Already, two major attractions have been revealed: a Cars Road Rally and an unnamed racing attraction reminiscent of Tomorrowland Speedway. Additionally, Piston Peak will boast several locales inspired by the Cars franchise, such as Ranger HQ and a visitor lodge. Although no official opening date has been set, fans anticipate it to open sometime between 2027 and 2028.
Picture a stunning wilderness teeming with majestic trees, mountains capped with snow, awe-inspiring waterfalls, thunderous rivers, and striking geysers. Although it’s not real, Piston Peak draws inspiration from the Rocky Mountains region and the storied history, iconic landmarks, and natural wonders of America’s frontier and its national parks.

At the D3 Expo 2024 held in Brazil, Piston Peak was unveiled along with another upcoming location, tentatively named “Villains Land,” featuring various Disney antagonists such as the Queen of Hearts, Jafar, Maleficent, Cruella de Vil, and others. As of now, Disney has not disclosed specifics about Villains Land, including its launch date. Therefore, fans are advised to stay tuned for future updates.
Besides certain areas and attractions being closed for Piston Peak construction, there’s another exciting change coming in July: the premiere of Disney Starlight: Dream the Night Away at Magic Kingdom! This fantastic new nighttime parade is set to start on July 20, 2025. To make the event even more special, exclusive merchandise and food options will be available throughout the park.
