Sega is introducing a fresh take on the classic character, Sonic the Hedgehog, with a new mobile card game titled “Sonic Blitz.” This unique approach to the Blue Blur is something that hasn’t been attempted before. The past few years have brought excitement for Sonic fans, as live-action films have become a box office hit and numerous new games across various genres and platforms have been released. Last year witnessed the update of a timeless title, Sonic X Shadow Generations, with fresh story content, while Sonic Racing: CrossWorld is expected to provide adrenaline-pumping action as one of the upcoming kart racers in 2025.

Initially scheduled for a full launch on May 8, “Sonic Rumble,” an online battle royale platformer being developed by Rovio Entertainment, experienced another delay to give developers additional time to incorporate new features introduced in the game’s latest update. Known predominantly for the Angry Birds franchise, Rovio was planning to release Sonic Rumble as its first post-acquisition game from Sega (2023). However, it transpired that Rovio had been secretly working on another Sonic mobile spin-off.

Sonic Blitz, a turn-based card game, has been introduced in the Philippines for now, though it’s not accessible for other regions yet. You can check out its pages on Apple’s App Store and Google Play, as per Siliconera. In this game, players create decks of cards showcasing various characters from the Sonic universe, each one possessing unique health values, attack strength, and special skills. Players arrange their cards in either of two lanes on the game board, with a maximum of four cards allowed per lane. The aim is to reduce the opponent’s health points.

In the game Sonic Blitz, speed is still a significant aspect, as each player can execute a “sprint” move at the end of their turn to deal additional damage. From the previews available on YouTube by MDGamestation, it appears that the characters in Sonic Blitz span a wide range, including popular characters like Sonic and Amy, as well as less familiar ones such as Marine the Raccoon.

Currently, Sonic Blitz can only be found in the Philippines, with no news about a wider release yet. Despite being an unusual move for the high-octane platforming series that is Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic Blitz seems intriguing and could serve as a great filler until Sonic’s next big storyline unfolds.
