MindsEye Dev Says Development is About “An Idea, a Dream,” Not AI Slop

In a blend of contemporary reality and future-oriented perspective, MindsEye is an immersive third-person action game that unfolds within a fictional metropolis. This city is dominated by greed, advanced technology, government misconduct, and the devastating effects of climate change. These factors hold its inhabitants in their grip, teetering on the brink of societal collapse.

In many ways, Redrock City from MindsEye resembles a traditional cyberpunk dystopia, yet its elements are more deeply embedded in everyday life concepts and innovations. Some of these ideas have the potential to grow into reality as we know it today. One such concept, Artificial Intelligence (AI), plays a significant role in both the storyline and gameplay of MindsEye. The increasing prominence of AI, especially in game design, shares remarkable similarities with fundamental aspects of MindsEye. Game Rant recently interviewed Build A Rocket Boy developers to discuss how AI influenced their creative process, as well as their perspective on AI and the studio’s broader vision.

MindsEye Dev Talks Human Imagination and the Use of AI

Embracing a Philosophy of Creativity and Intention

Discussing the fundamental belief that underpins Build A Rocket Boy’s approach to using AI in game development, the team articulated:

In terms of their core philosophy regarding AI integration within games, the Build A Rocket Boy team expressed:

Regarding their key perspective on employing AI for game creation, the members of Build A Rocket Boy shared:

On the underlying idea driving how they incorporate AI in video games, the team at Build A Rocket Boy explained:

Our aim is for our players to enjoy purposeful and thoughtfully designed experiences, ones born from creativity and vision rather than randomness. Moving forward, we’ll stick to this philosophy when creating our products. We’re strong advocates for AI that enhances human creativity, not overpowers it.

In these eight years since the creation of MindsEye, it’s been fascinating to observe how its themes and stories have grown increasingly relevant. They’ve noted that events unfolding in reality seem strikingly similar to the narrative of MindsEye, and they believe several of their characters bear striking resemblances to real-life individuals.

How MindsEye Devs Use AI to Bolster Their Human-Driven Vision

Regarding the application of AI within the studio’s creative process, it was observed that while AI tools were utilized for enhancing code and certain design tasks like concept art and in-game assets, their role was primarily restricted. The AI was not employed to generate code or replace the skilled team of artists and programmers. Instead, AI is being incorporated into the studio’s design philosophy to aid and complement the creative process. The team values the joy of creating and sharing, and they don’t envision AI as a replacement for their talented personnel in their specific field.

Ponder this question: Does it sound appealing to kids if an AI constructs their Lego projects for them? Aren’t they likely to miss out on the satisfying physical interaction during the building process? Or would they benefit more from an AI that suggests blueprints, but leaves them in charge of their own masterpiece?

By harmonizing AI’s functional use in games with the fundamental aspects of human imagination and resourcefulness, MindsEye intends to demonstrate Build A Rocket Boy’s portrayal of technology, not only within its first game but also beyond it.
