It seems that the situation surrounding the launch and pre-orders for the Switch 2 has been less than ideal. To make matters worse, some customers who purchased the console have discovered that their units were damaged upon acquisition from the retail stores.
It appears that the majority of the issues so far have been traced back to a specific GameStop store located in Staten Island, New York. Here, employees took the unconventional step of attaching customers’ receipts to the front of the Nintendo Switch 2 packaging. As a passionate gamer, I can’t help but wonder about the reasoning behind this unusual practice.
Unfortunately, the screen of the console is located directly at the front of the box with minimal protective barriers aside from the cardboard casing and a fragile plastic sheet. The staples used for attaching the receipt have unexpectedly pierced through the packing and inflicted damage on the screen.
Staples Are Ruining The Switch 2 Launch Day
People with damaged consoles swiftly expressed their annoyance on platforms such as Twitter and Reddit.
One Reddit user displayed a damaged Nintendo Switch 2, and many others in the comments shared similar screen punctures, all having bought it from the same retailer.
A different user on platform X didn’t encounter this specific problem themselves, but they highlighted the insufficient protection for the console and warned about an increased risk of broken screens, not only due to mishandling during transportation, but also from simple stacking of the boxes while being shipped.
Up until now, neither Nintendo nor GameStop seem to have acknowledged this problem, suggesting that those who received damaged consoles might need to return to the stores for a resolution.
It’s truly unfortunate to spend hours waiting in line, possibly even multiple hours, and then find that your newly purchased Nintendo Switch 2 is faulty right out of the box. I hope those affected can swap their consoles for undamaged ones as soon as supply permits.
Launching a new console console is always hectic, but it appears that the release of the Switch 2 has taken things up a notch. Nintendo significantly misjudged the demand for this device, causing some eager fans to have their pre-orders unexpectedly canceled just before the launch date.
I’m hoping that the screen damage problem at this specific GameStop store is isolated and not a broader issue. Also, I hope the insufficient packaging protection for the screen doesn’t lead to more problems with the console in the future.
