YouTube is stirring up some controversy by planning to increase ad frequency on their Premium Lite subscription service. Though the changes haven’t been implemented yet, those who have subscribed to YouTube Premium Lite are expressing their dissatisfaction about the upcoming adjustments.
Although YouTube remains a complimentary platform, it has progressively introduced subscription packages throughout its existence, providing enhanced perks to its users. For instance, one of these plans was YouTube Red, boasting exclusive content. Currently, YouTube provides options such as YouTube Premium, Premium Lite, and YouTube TV.
YouTube recently introduced a lighter version of Premium called YouTube Premium Lite, which allows for fewer ad interruptions in most videos excluding music ones. Unlike the standard YouTube Premium, this service costs $7.99 monthly instead of $13.99. However, users of YouTube Premium Lite have started receiving emails indicating that more ads will be added to the service in the future. The email indicates that as of June 30, 2025, ads may start appearing on YouTube Shorts. This comes along with existing ads displayed on music content and when users search or navigate the platform.
YouTube Keeps Changing the Way Ads Work
It’s not surprising that some users are displeased with the adjustment to the Premium Lite plan, as they joined specifically to avoid advertisements. The YouTube Premium Lite doesn’t provide all the additional features of the standard YouTube Premium, such as offline video viewing and background playback. Some YouTube users who chose the Lite tier due to excessive ads on the platform may now find themselves confronted with even more advertising.
2024 saw YouTube rake in a staggering $36 billion USD from ad revenue on their platform. Since then, they’ve become stricter than ever about adblockers, giving users two options: either sit through the ads or opt for a premium subscription. Additionally, YouTube has been focusing more on Shorts content recently, which is essentially a response to competitors like TikTok and Instagram Reels. As more creators jump on the Shorts bandwagon, we’ll soon find out if YouTube Premium Lite users will prefer ad-free viewing by upgrading to the pricier service or continue with the Shorts that now come with ads.
Besides the changes already implemented, YouTube has also modified its ad format in recent times. For instance, they introduced mid-roll ads in May and positioned them at natural pauses, ensuring they don’t disrupt the video or spoken dialogue. Additionally, in May, YouTube unveiled a new AI feature called “Peak Points” that detects moments when viewers pay more attention to the video, then places ads immediately after these peak points. Given YouTube’s tendency to regularly adjust its ad serving methods, it’s possible we may see additional modifications to YouTube Premium Lite in the future.
