Summary
- Deltarune‘s unconventional release schedule allowed fans to savor each chapter instead of rushing through the story.
- Chapter 4, The Prophecy, closes the first half of this story with emotional character interactions and a high-stakes plot.
- Chapter 2 introduced the vibrant Cyber World, alongside its unique characters and its multiple inventive boss fights.
Rather than following the traditional pattern of its precursor, Undertale, Deltarune has adopted a significantly unorthodox release strategy. In 2018, groundbreaking independent developer Toby Fox debuted the initial phase of his innovative new undertaking for free. Similarly, he made the second chapter available in 2021. Fast forward to June 2025, they have finally launched the third and fourth chapters (it’s also worth mentioning that all four chapters have been adapted for other consoles, such as PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2).
This atypical release pattern, though unusual, offers fans the chance to savor each installment as a standalone tale rather than powering through it all in one sitting merely to reach the conclusion. Remarkably, Toby Fox and his crew designed each part individually, giving them distinct settings, characters, gameplay mechanics, and both a clear start and finish line. In actuality, every Deltarune chapter has been a delightful gaming experience, but it’s fair to say that some are more engaging than others.
4. Chapter 1: The Beginning
A Fun But Simple Tutorial That Leaves Players With Too Many Questions
- Release Date: October 31, 2018
Back in 2018, out of the blue, I stumbled upon the first chapter of Deltarune – a game that left me with quite a few puzzles to unravel: What’s the connection between this new game and Undertale? Why are all the major characters from Undertale living a peaceful life on the surface? Is our new playable character, Kris, supposed to be a villain? Despite the mystery, I was more than happy to wait for answers because the game itself was incredibly enjoyable. It built upon the mechanics of its predecessor and introduced even more vibrant characters and infectiously catchy background tunes.
Playing The Beginning of Deltarune before its sequels today reveals that it’s primarily designed as a demonstration or tutorial, gradually introducing players to this fresh world and meticulously teaching them the enhanced mechanics. While characters like Susie, Ralsei, and Lancer are certainly engaging in this opening chapter, they lack significant development, and the storyline is still largely undefined at this stage. It’s worth noting that Chapter 1 of Deltarune serves as a fantastic tutorial for this captivating journey, but every aspect – gameplay, narrative, and music – is executed more effectively in subsequent chapters.
3. Chapter 4: Prophecy
A Dark And Gloomy Quest That Closes Off The First Half Of This Epic Story
- Release Date: June 5, 2025
In the final chapter of Deltarune titled “The Prophecy“, things get strange and unconventional. For one, the beginning segment in the bright realm is lengthy compared to previous chapters, which some gamers might find dull, but it’s also captivating, particularly the bit at Noelle’s house where you must manipulate Kris’s spirit as they flee from their eerie, empty shell. Additionally, the Church stands out as the most solemn and sparsely populated part of the dark realm. It doesn’t introduce many new characters (except for the legendary “Old man”) or notable locations compared to other sections.
In this chapter, the spotlight shines on the legendary prophecy and the trio – Kris, Susie, and Ralsei. Their interactions in this part are both heartwarming and intense, and the tension of its storyline seems to be the climax of what we’ve been developing since earlier chapters. Although Chapter 4 does contain some standout moments (particularly the battle with Jackenstein), it leans more towards storytelling than gameplay. The numerous climbing sequences might take some getting used to, but they add a refreshing twist that keeps the gameplay engaging, particularly during chase scenes.
2. Chapter 3: Late Night
A Bizarre (But Hilarious) Journey Through Mr. Ant Tenna’s TV World
- Release Date: June 5, 2025
Long-time enthusiasts of Deltarune have been pondering for over three years about the events that unfolded at the end of Chapter 2 and the identity of the enigmatic smiling television figure. However, their patience has paid off as they finally received many answers with the recent twin launch. The highly anticipated Chapter 3: Late Night was hailed as one of the game’s best and most unforgettable sections. As it turns out, that television personality was none other than Mr. Ant Tenna, the sovereign of the TV realm, who persuaded the three protagonists to partake in a bizarre televised competition.
In Chapter 3, our heroes Kris, Susie, and Ralsei embark on another captivating journey in Deltarune, this time exploring a vibrant area within the Dark World designed around TV broadcasts. This means they’ll be participating in various TV shows focused on gaming, cooking, music, and other intriguing subjects. Each show presents unique twists that make it stand out. However, as is often the case, Tenna conceals a sinister secret, and it will be the trio’s responsibility to uncover his true intentions. The climactic fight against this chapter’s main adversary is undeniably one of the most entertaining and laugh-out-loud funny battles in the entire game. Yet, fans will forever cherish Chapter 3 for its unexpected finale, which introduces a long-anticipated character hinted at since Chapter 1.
1. Chapter 2: A Cyber’s World
This Whacky Cyber World Adventure Introduced Some Of The Best Characters, Locations, And Bosses In The Entire Game
- Release Date: September 17, 2021
It goes without saying that Deltarune has consistently been highly popular, particularly since Undertale had already garnered an enormous fanbase. While Chapter 1 was widely accepted, it’s clear that Chapter 2 is what solidified this project as something truly exceptional, leaving fans anxiously awaiting the arrival of future installments. Appropriately named “A Cyber’s World,” in this chapter, Kris, Susie, and Ralsei not only work to close another dark fountain in a fresh part of the Dark World, but they also strive to save their two classmates, Noelle and Berdley, from the grip of its peculiar queen.
As a gaming enthusiast diving into Deltarune, let me tell you, A Cyber’s World is an electrifying and vivid landscape brimming with computer, virus, and internet motifs, making it the most captivating and entertaining location in this game. Chapter 2 has also unveiled a rich tapestry of one-of-a-kind, endearing characters, such as Queen and Spamton, while subtly evolving and deepening established ones, notably Noelle, Susie, and Berdley, giving them distinctive personalities. The blossoming bond between Susie and Noelle is the heart of this chapter’s storyline. Moreover, the enemy encounters and boss battles in A Cyber’s World are creatively designed, skillfully utilizing Deltarune’s exclusive RPG mechanics. To the delight of many fans, Chapter 2 even features an alternative route that echoes Undertale’s distinctive gameplay style. It will be a challenge to surpass Chapter 2 as the best chapter in the game, but if Toby Fox and his team build on it for future chapters, they will undoubtedly create something extraordinary that may eventually outshine it.
