Summary
- EA has finally acknowledged Star Wars Battlefront 2’s massive player resurgence.
- The game saw a big spike in players last month as fans attempt to get EA to green-light a third game.
- The official EA Play account has commented on the resurgence, but simply urged players to sign up to the service and jump into Battlefront 2.
Publisher EA has admitted to the recent surge of interest in Star Wars Battlefront 2, but not quite in the manner fans were anticipating. Despite the ever-growing number of players enjoying Star Wars Battlefront 2 for over eight years now, many are eagerly waiting for EA to announce a new game in the series. However, their response has been somewhat underwhelming, as they’ve merely encouraged more individuals to engage in combat instead.
Support for the popular game “Star Wars Battlefront 2”, initially launched on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in 2017, was discontinued in 2020. Despite a rocky start, the shooter garnered positive feedback from players following Electronic Arts’ (EA) significant changes to its progression system and reduction of intrusive microtransactions. Regrettably, EA declined DICE’s proposal for a third installment in the series due to licensing expenses. Since then, DICE has focused on expanding the “Battlefield” franchise. However, a recent upsurge in “Star Wars Battlefront 2” players has sparked calls upon EA to reconsider the development of a new game in the series.
EA Finally Acknowledges Star Wars Battlefront 2’s Player Resurgence
Following a significant surge in players for Star Wars Battlefront 2 last month, fans have been eagerly waiting for Electronic Arts (EA) to address the situation. Regrettably, their initial statement on the matter seems rather underwhelming, yet it does indicate that EA is cognizant of the current circumstances. On the EA Play Twitter account, the studio referred to Battlefront 2 as “the topic du jour in the galaxy.” They then encouraged fans to check out EA Play and see what all the buzz is about. Despite acknowledging the game’s player influx, it appears that EA prefers to leverage this opportunity for promoting EA Play, rather than addressing demands for a Star Wars Battlefront 3 release.
It’s not unexpected given the situation, as EA has indirectly hinted that the release of Star Wars Battlefront 3 is unlikely to occur in the near future. In late May, it was announced that EA had scrapped its upcoming Black Panther game. A report from IGN stated that EA is now concentrating on a select number of its most well-known brands, and Star Wars Battlefront is not among them. While Respawn’s Star Wars: Jedi series continues to be backed by EA, the studios are currently focusing solely on Battlefield, The Sims, Skate, Apex Legends, and an unannounced Iron Man game. Although things may change in the future, it seems that a third installment of the series is not imminent.
It’s disheartening that Electronic Arts (EA) hasn’t given the green light for a third Star Wars Battlefront game, especially since the original developers are eager to create another one. A former developer shared on Reddit that he and his team desire to reunite and develop another Battlefront game following the game’s sudden popularity comeback. Unfortunately, the power to develop another game lies with EA, who currently show no signs of moving quickly to fulfill fans’ wishes for a new installment.
