This project never saw the light of day and remained unknown to many until a leaked Nintendo Switch development kit exposed a prototype menu screen displaying a LEGO minifigure with symbols of advancement such as rockets, castles, pyramids, etc. The idea of a LEGO-inspired take on the Civilization series by Sid Meier initially appears unconventional, but it has a logical appeal. Regrettably, its cancellation seems like a squandered chance.

The leaked development kit reveals a Lego game, reminiscent of Civilization but tailored for a younger and less experienced crowd, possibly featuring a Lego Dimensions-style blend that combines renowned characters and eras into a brick-based strategy gameplay. This concept is not only plausible, but it could be a viable project for publishers to explore, particularly given that Lego has been increasingly partnering with game developers in recent times.

The Strategy Genre Is Ready for LEGO

The fundamental gameplay pattern in the popular “Civilization” series, which progresses from rudimentary technology to a modern society, has been intricate yet leisurely paced since its inception. However, this design could benefit from being made more straightforward, particularly for novice players or those who prefer a strategic gaming experience without lengthy play sessions of 12 hours. Games such as “Civilization Revolution” have demonstrated that there’s an appetite for a condensed “Civ” gaming experience.

LEGO might have transformed that blueprint into something vibrant, amusing, and user-friendly. As per Reddit user Thevoid2YT and other members of the r/legogaming community, the initial model was problematic, often crashing right away. However, there’s a possibility for a redo now without any negative consequences. A LEGO adaptation of Civilization, contrary to popular belief, wouldn’t just be a novelty. Since LEGO is inherently about constructing structures, worlds, and concepts, adding turn-based strategy, minifigure leaders, and comedic situations (“Abraham Lincoln has discovered Banana Farming!”) could make the game highly appealing.

LEGO Horizon Adventures, LEGO Fortnite collaborations, and Mario crossovers show that the brand isn’t shy about exploring different game genres. A LEGO 4X game might have seemed far-fetched a decade ago, but it doesn’t seem out of place now. In fact, this idea could prosper now more than ever, especially if it’s developed for Switch 2 with multiplayer capabilities.

Civilization X LEGO Wasn’t a Bad Idea, It Might Just Have Surfaced Ahead of Its Time

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but notice the retro vibe of the leaked menu image, which seems to suggest an idea from years past. Yet, despite its apparent age, I believe it was a visionary concept in need of the perfect moment and the right team to bring it to life. With today’s advanced hardware, cross-platform ecosystems, and a diverse player base that ranges across generations, this concept has the potential to thrive in our current gaming landscape.

Regardless of whether it’s more like a lighter version of the mechanics in Civilization or something completely innovative, the fundamental idea is robust. Given that many franchises are frequently revived or reimagined, there’s no justification for a LEGO Civilization game not to get another opportunity. Ideally, with the right crew and goals this time around, it could be successful.
