Halo: Ditch the Remakes, Focus on the Future!

As a passionate gamer, I’ve noticed that remakes are popping up left and right in today’s gaming world, and it seems like even the legendary Halo franchise might join the bandwagon. Whispers about a remake of Halo: Combat Evolved started circulating last year, around the time 343 Industries decided to rebrand itself as Halo Studios. This change hinted at a potential evolution in their design approach. Intriguingly, part of this “Halo Studios” announcement also included the news that they would be transitioning to Unreal Engine 5, which only served to fuel the speculation about a possible remake.

Absolutely, any rumors circulating about upcoming Halo remakes should be viewed with a degree of skepticism, as neither Halo Studios nor Microsoft have confirmed these reports. However, given the declining popularity of the Halo franchise over the years, and its previous dominance in the FPS market with games like Halo 3 and Halo: Reach, it’s not surprising that these giants might consider remaking older Halo games. Yet, it would be more beneficial for Halo Studios to focus on creating new experiences that remind fans of what made Halo unique, rather than attempting to rekindle past successes.

Halo Studios Shouldn’t Remake the Old Halo Games

Modern Halo Is In Dire Need of More Allure, and Remakes Won’t Help That

In recent times, the Resident Evil series has seen something of a revival, and games like the remakes of RE2 and RE4 have certainly contributed to this resurgence, but it’s not just these games that have fueled the comeback. Before Capcom released the remake of RE2, they had already put out Resident Evil 7, a fresh take on the series that was both commercially and critically successful, demonstrating that there was still plenty of potential left in the franchise. When the remake of RE2 finally arrived, it served as a tribute to a beloved series, honoring its history while also acknowledging and adapting to its new contemporary perspective.

A remake of Halo: CE by Halo Studios wouldn’t necessarily mean a celebration of its legacy. Instead, it might evoke memories of the franchise’s past glory, which some fans feel has been surpassed by more recent Halo games. Microsoft and Halo Studios have struggled to regain their footing, leading to this perception. So, while a remake could be well-made and fun, it might also serve as a reminder of the series’ decline, rather than echoing the successful reboots like RE2 and RE4 remakes.

In the least desirable outcome, these remakes might make the existing Halo games appear less appealing when compared. For example, if Halo Studios chooses to keep the original trilogy’s storyline unaltered, players may either recall or discover for themselves how distinct Bungie’s storytelling style in Halo differs from that of 343 Industries. More often than not, this comparison won’t be flattering.

Additionally, it’s important to mention that the classic Halo games such as Combat Evolved have undergone remastering processes and now function flawlessly on both PC and Xbox platforms. As a result, these games don’t seem to necessitate remakes at this time.

Halo Studios Needs To Look Toward the Horizon

The current iterations of Halo receive their fair share of criticism, not all of which is justified. While the newer games may struggle to match the greatness of the originals, this isn’t entirely within the control of Halo Studios. At the time of its release, nothing quite like the original Combat Evolved had ever been seen. Creating such a unique experience again in today’s era is challenging, if not outright impossible. In simpler terms, Halo Studios needs to carve out its own identity as the leader of the Halo franchise, and focusing too much on nostalgic remakes might prevent this from happening.
