Ghost of Yotei Can Take One Type of Easter Egg to New Heights

For over 50 years now, Easter eggs have remained an ingrained part of the video game industry. From hidden rooms to secret dialogue to concealed items, Easter eggs are a great way for video game developers to reference their favorite pieces of media and any fellow games that may have inspired them. Given Sucker Punch’s track-record, it’s very likely Ghost of Yotei will have its own fair share of Easter eggs.

Despite its mature subject matter and relatively dark tone, Ghost of Tsushima wasn’t afraid to have a little fun when it came to collectibles and environmental secrets. Aside from the origami of fellow PlayStation first-party exclusives, two of Ghost of Tsushima‘s best Easter eggs reference Sucker Punch’s previous work, and they’re references that could be taken to even greater heights in Ghost of Yotei.

Ghost of Tsushima Included Some Great References to Sucker Punch’s Past Work

Established in 1997, the game development company Sucker Punch Productions gained significant recognition in 2002 with their introduction of the Sly Cooper franchise. Often cited as one of the PlayStation 2’s top trilogies, the Sly Cooper series continues to have a dedicated fanbase, even after nearly two decades without a new installment.

While Sucker Punch may not be willing to return to the Sly Cooper series for a new entry, it isn’t shy about honoring the series’ legacy. Ghost of Tsushima contains a handful of Sly Cooper Easter eggs, including a headband that sports the series’ deep blue color scheme and the titular raccoon’s cane, as well as a Sword Kit that features the same color scheme and a raccoon tail-like saya. If players equip the headband, Sword Kit, a few other thief-themed pieces of gear, and the blue ‘Ocean’s Guardian’ dye, they’ll unlock the hidden trophy, “Cooper Clan Cosplayer.”

Ghost of Tsushima also features a handful of references to Sucker Punch’s other acclaimed PlayStation franchise, Infamous. In the base game, players can find the ‘Band of the Second Son,’ a headband that references the 2014 Infamous entry of the same name. As well as its name, this headband references Second Son with its color scheme, with it sporting the same burgundy palette as player-character Delsin Rowe’s beanie.

Infamous receives a few more shout-outs during Ghost of Tsushima‘s Iki Island expansion, where players can find a handful of cave paintings depicting key characters and symbols from the franchise, including Infamous‘ first protagonist, Cole MacGrath. It’s great to see Sucker Punch be so willing to reference its past franchises, and Ghost of Yotei could take things one step further.

Ghost of Yotei Can Take its Sucker Punch Easter Eggs to New Heights

Ghost of Yotei‘s Sly Cooper and Infamous Easter eggs should go beyond cosmetics. It’d likely take some real effort, but it could be really fun to see Sly Cooper‘s iconic cane come to Ghost of Yotei as a usable weapon, complete with its own set of unique animations. Similarly, it’d be fun to see Infamous get its own spot in Atsu’s arsenal, perhaps with some kind of lightning-imbued grenade or some other gadget that references Infamous‘ superpowers.
