Summary
- The Hell mode in the Onimusha 2 remaster is so difficult that only a couple of developers managed to beat it.
- The new difficulty level makes players die from a single hit, essentially rendering the health bar meaningless.
Few developers working on the Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny remaster were able to conquer its Hell difficulty, implying that the challenging new difficulty level in the updated version of Onimusha 2 may be too tough for many gamers.
7th March signified the 23rd anniversary of the initial release of “Samurai’s Destiny” in Japan. A month prior, Capcom unveiled their plans for a remastered version of “Onimusha 2”, slated to launch around late May 2025.
In the lead-up to the launch of Onimusha 2, the director Motohide Eshiro has been granting interviews about the original game and its upcoming remaster. During an interview with Automaton, this experienced industry figure talked about the challenging Hell difficulty level in the new version. He mentioned that only a handful of developers who are deeply familiar with the game have been able to finish it thus far. Given that even those well-versed in the game find it tough to conquer it, it seems reasonable to assume that most players won’t be able to handle the Hell difficulty level.
How Does Hell Difficulty Work in the Onimusha 2 Remaster?
In other words, what sets apart the difficulty of the remastered version of Onimusha 2’s Hell mode is that a single mistake leads to immediate game over. This means that the health bar becomes irrelevant as players must play flawlessly or risk being sent back to the start screen. Furthermore, Hell mode reduces the availability of items and increases enemy hostility. Essentially, it’s designed for those who are highly skilled and up for a tough challenge.
Onimusha 2 Remaster Almost Skipped the Hell Difficulty
Just the other day, a challenging new “Hell” mode was added to the remastered version of Onimusha: Warlords as part of a free update. As for the revamped edition of Onimusha 2, Eshiro shared that the team only included this mode if one of us could successfully conquer it. Given how few of us have been able to pull it off, the release of Onimusha 2 was almost without this Hell mode. The same self-imposed rule seemingly applied when adding the new difficulty to Onimusha: Warlords as well.
Hell mode is very challenging and is implemented for those who are confident in their skills.
The re-release of “Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny” is set to drop on May 23rd. This classic game can be found on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC platforms. Pre-orders are now available for $29.99, and Capcom has some special treats for those who pre-order: a five-track Orchestra Album Selection Pack and various in-game goodies! The remastered version will offer enhanced graphics, updated controls, an option to select the digital soundtrack, auto-save functionality, and most notably, several mini-games that were previously only accessible after completing the game are now available from the start. Oh, and for those who like a challenge, the infamous Hell difficulty level is included too!
