As the creator of the smash-hit game Death Stranding, I, Hideo Kojima, shared my thoughts on the forthcoming live-action film adaptation. I’m feeling quite positive about this project given that its director has experienced a few of my games in the past.
Death Stranding represents an innovative action game, produced by Kojima Productions, launched in November 2019. The game takes place in a post-apocalyptic United States, following a devastating event known as “The Death Stranding,” which led to the fall of civilization and left pockets of isolated communities. Players assume the role of Sam Porter Bridges, portrayed by Norman Reedus, who delivers essential supplies between separated colonies amidst the dangerous terrain, where aggressive creatures like Beached Things (BTs) and MULES lurk. Alongside deliveries, Sam’s main objective is to reestablish contact among fragmented cities to reintegrate them into the Chiral Network, thereby reuniting the United Cities of America (UCA). In December 2023, it was announced that a live-action adaptation is underway. Kojima Productions is partnering with independent film studio A24 for this venture, and Kojima expresses optimism about the upcoming film.
Hideo Kojima, known for his work on Death Stranding and Metal Gear Solid 1, expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming live-action Death Stranding film produced by A24. His remarks were shared via a translation by Genki, a game magazine columnist, on platform X (formerly Twitter). Kojima praised director Michael Sarnoski for his familiarity with Kojima’s games and described the film as “unbelievable” and “strange.” He also commended Sarnoski for being intelligent, having good taste, and being a kind individual. Kojima was particularly pleased that Sarnoski, who doesn’t seem like a typical Hollywood figure, would be directing the live-action movie.
Many are thrilled to hear that Sarnoski is part of the Death Stranding project as his gaming experience allows him to fully immerse himself in the universe, which will undoubtedly benefit him when writing the script. This month, it was confirmed that Sarnoski will be both screenwriter and director for the upcoming Death Stranding film. His past work includes films like Pig and A Quiet Place: Day One. The production of this movie is a joint effort between A24 and Kojima Productions, with Kojima still playing an active role in shaping the plot, design, and overall vision for the project, even though he won’t be directing it himself.
It appears that Kojima is endorsing Sarnoski, and there’s a good reason why – playing the game offers Kojima a direct understanding of the Death Stranding universe. The game provides an effective way to delve deeply into the Death Stranding world, uncover its distinctive mechanics, appreciate its emotional layers, particularly regarding isolation, connection, and resilience. These aspects will enable Sarnoski to capture the essence of the game, including its ambiance, storyline, and subtle details for the movie adaptation. Moreover, immersing himself in the game will help him recreate the eerie landscape of Death Stranding when he brings it to the big screen. Sarnoski is an excellent choice for Death Stranding because his debut film, Pig, featuring Nicolas Cage, was highly acclaimed for its exploration of significant societal themes such as grief and loss within a revenge thriller. Similar themes are found in Death Stranding.
The anticipated Death Stranding movie has not yet received an official title or release date.
