Summary
- Overwatch 2 devs revealed scrapped Gundam Wing crossover skin ideas like Tallgeese Ana and Heavyarms Mauga.
- The crossover event features new skins available until May 12.
In the latest update, Overwatch 2 unveiled several potential character skins inspired by the upcoming crossover with Gundam Wing. These ideas encompassed D.Va as a pilot, Ana transformed into Tallgeese, and both Mauga and Zarya taking on the roles of Heavyarms. Although these designs didn’t advance beyond the conceptual stage, they offer an intriguing glimpse into what the Overwatch 2 x Gundam Wing collaboration might have showcased if these ideas had been fully realized.
As a dedicated gamer, I’m thrilled to share that the long-awaited collaboration between Overwatch 2 and Gundam Wing has finally been unveiled! In this epic crossover, Mercy transforms into the iconic Wing Gundam Zero, Ramattra morphs into Epyon, Soldier: 76 becomes Tallgeese, and Reaper assumes the role of Deathscythe. From April 29 to May 12, enthusiasts can grab these stunning skins for 2800 Overwatch Coins each or save with a bundle deal priced at 5900 Overwatch Coins. Let’s gear up and jump into the action!
Initially, the collaboration between Gundam Wing and Overwatch 2 was envisioned with a distinctly different lineup of characters. In discussions with Comicbook and GameSpot, Overwatch 2’s associate director of product management Aimee Dennett and art director Dion Rogers shared some discarded skin ideas from the development phase. Notable cuts included Ana as Tallgeese, Mauga and Zarya as Heavyarms, and D.Va as one of the human pilots from Gundam Wing, piloting their mech. Dennet noted that while certain elements, like Heavyarms Mauga’s weapons, were visually stunning, the full concepts didn’t resonate as strongly as the final four characters. In essence, ideas that seemed promising on paper didn’t translate as effectively in practice.
Overwatch 2 x Gundam Wing Unused Skin Ideas
- Tallgeese Ana
- Heavyarms Mauga
- Heavyarms Zarya
- D.Va as one of the human characters in Gundam Wing
In another twist, the Gundam Wing crossover became the first to feature four characters who had previously appeared in collaborations. Interestingly, Ana, yet to be involved in a collaboration, was initially intended to be the model for Tallgeese because of their shared weaponry. However, when compared to Soldier: 76, Overwatch 2 chose the latter instead. Dennett expressed eagerness to create a collaboration skin for Ana, but upon comparing Soldier and Ana visually, it was evident that Soldier was the superior choice. Although Overwatch 2 may consider past collaborations as a deciding factor, the successful realization of a concept based on visual or thematic aspects takes precedence over this when it comes to crossovers.
Among the selected characters, Ramattra is the sole robot in the collaboration, surprising some gamers who felt it was an oversight. However, according to Rogers, this decision was deliberate. “Omnic heroes can be challenging to make as transformative as we aim for in relation to Gundam,” he explained. Interestingly, Ramattra was a unique case because incorporating the villainous Epyon from Gundam was difficult due to Ramattra’s twin forms in Overwatch 2, and because of his high fan popularity. Rogers suggested that they might not have been able to choose another hero given some fans’ preferences.
In a shift from their previous methods for crossovers, this fresh philosophy in Overwatch 2 has resulted in some of the most revolutionary collaboration skins ever seen. One such skin is the first to completely replace Mercy, as Rogers stated. While her physical appearance has been replaced and her face concealed, Overwatch 2 maintained her outline by using animations, her staff, and crucially, her wings. According to Rogers, it’s the wings that enable this transformation because their presence ensures players can still recognize the hero.
In this new design, Mercy undergoes a complete metamorphosis – a transformation so profound that her physical form, including her face, is no longer visible. However, her iconic wings remain, serving as a constant reminder of her identity. By preserving these distinctive features, players will easily identify the hero.
Even though these skins are good, it’s intriguing to imagine how different the look might be with a new roster of characters. Fortunately, the second partnership between Overwatch 2 and LE SSERAFIM demonstrates that there could potentially be more Gundam-themed skins in Future Earth in the future.
