Why Far Cry 5’s Silent Protagonist Actually Makes the Game More Immersive

Since the debut of Far Cry 3, the series has consistently emphasized its antagonists, and for a good reason. Characters like Joseph Seed, Pagan Min, and Vaas Montenegro are some of the most iconic video game villains ever created, often gracing the covers of each installment in the series so far. The series recognizes that these villains are the main attractions, as evidenced by their prominent roles. However, Ubisoft has also produced several captivating protagonists, notably Jason Brody and Ajay Ghale. Yet, when it comes to discussing Far Cry heroes, Far Cry 5 seems to be a notable exception in the conversation.

In an unprecedented step for the series, the secondary protagonist in Far Cry 5 is completely customizable. They don’t have any predefined history, physical appearance, gender, or voice. Even Dani from Far Cry 6, who can be played as either male or female, was fully voice-acted based on the player’s choice within the game. In the game Far Cry 5, the Deputy character doesn’t have the same level of depth as others. Similar to Link from the Legend of Zelda series, Corvo Attano from Dishonored, and numerous Bethesda heroes, the Deputy’s silence enables players to insert their own intentions and thoughts into the character. This gives a role-playing aspect that’s missing in other games within the series, which can greatly influence how each playthrough of the game unfolds.

Moreover, Ubisoft abandoned the repetitive radio tower tasks, which players appreciated. Essentially, Hope Valley became a vast playground where gamers could freely explore and have fun. With such top-notch gameplay, having a silent protagonist was likely the smartest choice.

Without a doubt, the narrative in Far Cry 5 is captivating. However, it’s essential to note that the game primarily emphasizes its gameplay over delivering a heavy-handed storyline. It borrows many elements from the 2016 release of DOOM. While the plot offers depth for those keen on immersing themselves, the true highlight is the game mechanics.

Similarly to how the Doomslayer’s silence in DOOM keeps the focus on its intense and brutal action, the Deputy character’s stoic demeanor in Far Cry 5 ensures that the core gameplay experience remains at the forefront throughout.

Deputy’s Lack of Presence Directs the Seed Family’s Twisted Sermons at the Player

In the events of “Far Cry 5”, the protagonist is under the influence of different members from the Seed family – Jacob, John, Faith, and Joseph. During these interactions, it’s evident that the Seeds frequently advocate a distorted form of their beliefs to the protagonist. It’s challenging not to notice their persistent attempts to persuade the protagonist into adopting their corrupted ideology. If “Far Cry: New Dawn” is considered part of the continuity, they eventually manage to win over the protagonist.

In essence, the Deputy isn’t truly a character in the conventional sense. Due to their silent nature, the Seeds appear to be addressing the player more directly. This design choice is remarkably effective at instigating player opposition towards these zealots. The line between the Seeds and the game’s player becomes thin and fragile, like tissue paper. Instead of confronting a character, players are directly confronted by the actions of those within the video game.

The deputy’s lack of response throughout these discussions causes the Seeds to gaze intently at the camera without interruption, which gives an impression that they are addressing the player via the deputy’s blank canvas. This dialogue seems to comment on the player’s actions within the game and even provoke self-reflection regarding their motivations.
