A number of Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order hopefuls have complained about pushy sales tactics used by GameStop employees at their Astoria branch. Influential media figure, Elea Tsentzelis (Guywiththehair_), shared his own experience in a post on X and even uploaded a video of the exchange, indicating that he unwittingly paid approximately $900.
It seems that GameStop is making it necessary for you to purchase bundles, cases, screen protectors, and such items. They claim they can’t individually process the SKU for just the console, but it appears they have a different strategy at play. Additionally, Tzentzelis mentioned that other customers refused to include extra accessories in their bill and consequently left without their desired console.
GameStop Launches Investigation
The video shared by Guywiththehair_ on X reveals that despite having already included the Mario Kart World bundle, a Pro Controller, Donkey Kong Bananza, and a MicroSD card in his pre-order for Switch 2, Tzentzelis was informed he needed to add an additional two items to his order. (According to GameSpot)
In the comments section, other customers have shared instances where they felt compelled to purchase additional items like warranties, accessories, and GameStop Pro Memberships to guarantee getting the new Switch 2.
As a dedicated gamer, I penned down my experience at Astoria’s GameStop on April 28th in a Google review. I was among the eager folks waiting for the pre-order of the Switch 2. To our collective dismay, the store staff unexpectedly refused to sell us a console unless we also bought an assortment of accessories that none of us had any interest in.
The X account GameStopHelp has replied, ‘We’re currently looking into this issue. If you were unable to access service at our Astoria store, please send us a direct message so we can rectify the situation.’
It appears that Eliza De Los Santos, too, has encountered the same issue while attempting to purchase a PlayStation Portal, as evidenced by her Google review.
My spouse and I visited the store today to buy a PlayStation Portal. The staff member attempted to deceive us by stating that we needed to buy a pro membership in order to purchase it since it’s classified as a console. However, we left the store instead. Other customers have warned others about this store through Google reviews, claiming they add warranties to game purchases without the customers’ knowledge.” – De Los Santos.
The anticipated desire for the Nintendo Switch 2 is immense, as fans eagerly look forward to playing new games. Predictions indicate this could be the largest console launch ever, but given the high level of anticipation, some challenges preceding the release are understandable. However, overzealous attempts to sell additional products alongside console purchases, in an effort to capitalize on sales, is something that consumers are unwilling to tolerate.
