A Brand-New Survival-Horror Game is Coming to the Sega Dreamcast

PixelHeart is developing a new survival horror game called The Darkness for the Sega Dreamcast. Currently, details are scarce, but it will be exclusive to Sega’s last-ever console, the Dreamcast.

The Sega Dreamcast first launched in Japan in November 1998, and came to North America and Europe about a year later. Despite selling nine million units, it wasn’t commercially successful and ultimately led Sega to exit the console business as competitors like Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo gained dominance. Even so, the Dreamcast still has a loyal following, and it’s amazing that people are still creating new games for it today.

PixelHeart Announces New Sega Dreamcast Horror Game

PixelHeart, the studio behind many Dreamcast revivals, has announced a new survival horror game in development exclusively for the Sega Dreamcast. While the game’s official title remains unconfirmed, a post on X from PixelHeart’s Philippe Nguyen, hinting at “The darkness is coming,” strongly suggests that will be the name. Development is in its early stages, so gameplay footage isn’t available yet. However, the developer has shared a few key features: fixed camera angles, a dark and immersive atmosphere, and a clear inspiration from classic horror games.

Founded in 2018, PixelHeart distributes, creates, and publishes both retro and modern video games in both physical and digital formats. They’re dedicated to preserving the nostalgia of classic gaming, and work with a wide range of consoles, including the Neo Geo and Sega Genesis, as well as the Dreamcast.

Man, the Dreamcast was such a great console! It had so many awesome games, and it was surprisingly strong when it came to survival horror. I remember playing Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare, Dino Crisis, and Resident Evil 2 over and over. So, this new PixelHeart game has some big shoes to fill, but if it can capture that same classic, spooky vibe, I think it’s going to be really good.

Most game development now focuses on modern platforms, but a small, passionate community still creates and plays games for older consoles like the Sega Dreamcast. This goes beyond just making new games – dedicated fans often find ways to bring existing titles to these retro systems, offering a unique way to experience them. For example, someone recently unofficially ported Zelda: Ocarina of Time to the Dreamcast, letting players imagine how the game might have looked if it hadn’t been a Nintendo 64 exclusive. It’s great that these projects continue, as they help keep classic consoles relevant and fun.
