As a long-time fanatic of the Final Fantasy series, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia when I think about the Dissidia games. The thought of a remake or remaster of Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy is music to my ears, especially considering it as my personal favorite title in the series. However, there’s one aspect that, if not addressed, could potentially dampen the overall experience – Feral Chaos.
Currently, the future of the “Dissidia Final Fantasy” series remains uncertain. Consisting of fighting games, rhythm games, and mobile RPGs, these spin-offs from the popular “Final Fantasy” franchise have persisted due to their compelling premise and the enduring popularity of the initial PSP games. It’s no wonder that discussions about “Dissidia Final Fantasy” are still ongoing as late as 2024. The possibility exists for new storylines within the DLC of “Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin,” which could potentially bring the series back, but it may require a boost to reach its goal.
A modern update or enhancement of “Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy” would be more than satisfactory, considering it continues to be a beloved title among fans despite the advent of mobile and arcade versions. Notably, “Dissidia 012,” also known as “Dissidia Duodecim,” incorporates a full remake of the original “Dissidia” along with a prequel story campaign, numerous side stories, a new postgame campaign, a roguelike mode, and a custom story editor, all of which were introduced over a decade before “Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero.
Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy Hides One Lingering Disappointment
In the narrative of Dissidia, characters from various Final Fantasy games are guided by Cosmos, the deity of balance, and Chaos, the deity of chaos. While Cosmos is merely a non-playable character in the story, Chaos serves as the final boss for both Dissidia and Dissidia 012. Players were taken aback when they discovered that Dissidia 012 also featured a playable version of Chaos, known as Feral Chaos. This concept was warmly received by fans, with some even getting an early glimpse during the tutorial phase. However, the excitement surrounding this addition didn’t sustain long-term interest.
Feral Chaos Isn’t The Great Reward It Should Be
To access the Feral Chaos character, you need to finish the post-game scenario, which is a challenging sequence that can only be unlocked after successfully completing Dissidia 012‘s new prequel campaign. This journey isn’t easy and while it may not be the hardest challenge in Dissidia Final Fantasy, battling two progressively stronger versions of Feral Chaos will certainly push any player to their limits. Unfortunately, all this effort seems rather pointless when you purchase Feral Chaos from Dissidia‘s in-game shop at level 1, as there are restrictions on its use and it lacks the basic mechanics that make the game enjoyable. Despite being intended as an exciting extra, Feral Chaos turns out to be a significant disappointment.
How Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy Can Fix Feral Chaos
An updated version of the game Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy will need to implement several adjustments to address the issue with Feral Chaos. Initially, a small in-game purchase could be added to make Feral Chaos available within the game store. This approach is similar to how certain fighting games with extensive story modes, such as BlazBlue, have handled it. Another alternative could be to offer Feral Chaos at a high price point after completing the initial campaign. Secondly, restrictions on Feral Chaos, including no Assists, no EX build-up, and continuous Bravery drain, should be eliminated. These limitations are excessive and hinder the variety of equipment that Feral Chaos can use. To overcome these restrictions, players should be able to gain skills more easily without having to grind excessively.
Dissidia 012’s Balance Changes Should Hit Feral Chaos Hard
In the competitive version of Dissidia, which is a fighting game based on Final Fantasy, Feral Chaos is often prohibited because it has an unavoidable HP Attack projectile that cannot be dodged. Even if this move is banned, Feral Chaos still faces issues with inconsistent performance due to its large, powerful attacks and a huge hitbox that some stages and characters can use to their advantage. If a hypothetical remake of Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy were to be made, it would require extra attention in rebalancing the playable secret boss, Feral Chaos, especially after addressing the problematic HP Attack.
