A Lot of Pokemon GO Players Aren’t Bothering With Gigantamax Raids

A Lot of Pokemon GO Players Aren't Bothering With Gigantamax Raids

Key Takeaways

  • Many Pokemon GO players are avoiding Max Raids due to poor rewards and high effort.
  • Max Raids require parties of 10-40 players but don’t scale for party size, leaving many players empty-handed.
  • Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokemon have limited utility and require specific candies to level up, dissuading players.

As a dedicated Pokemon GO player with countless hours spent catching ’em all, I must confess that the Max Raids have left me feeling rather underwhelmed. The excitement of battling and capturing these massive creatures has been dampened by the lackluster rewards and the seemingly endless grind for specific candies to level them up.

Many players of the popular mobile game, Pokemon GO, appear to be shying away from Max Raids, a new feature that allows catching Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokemon in an augmented reality setting. Although these raids introduce fresh creatures for gamers to collect, it appears that the rewards do not outweigh the effort invested for a large number of players.

As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but share my excitement when I talk about the Max Raids that rolled out in the mobile version of Pokémon GO back in September 2024. These epic battles allow a group of us to engage in intense fights against gigantic versions of numerous Pokémon species. So far, the game has introduced around a dozen Dynamax Pokémon, and I’ve been lucky enough to encounter all the Kanto and Galar starters, along with some Gigantamax forms as well. It’s an experience every trainer should try!

Many gamers appear hesitant to participate in Max Raids for multiple reasons. According to the game’s official site, Max Raids are designed for groups of 10 to 40 players, yet they don’t adjust according to party size, leading some players to emerge from these challenges empty-handed even when using the maximum group size. Furthermore, players can amplify the potency of Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokemon’s Max Moves by spending Max Particles in Pokemon GO, but increasing the level of these Pokemon requires vast quantities of candy specific to each species, a resource that many players claim they lack due to the current scarcity of those particular Pokemon in the game.

Pokemon GO Players are Avoiding Max Raids

Incorporating these issues is the narrow application of Dynamx Pokemon within Pokemon GO. Although introducing fresh monsters to the collection entices many gamers, Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokemon can mainly engage in battles with other Dynamax and Gigantamax creatures via Max Battles, which significantly reduces their usefulness across most of the gameplay. They are capable of luring additional Dynamax and Gigantamax creatures at designated Power Spots on the map, a feature some Reddit users have found entertaining, but generally not one that compensates for their restricted battle application.

Niantic has listened to player feedback and made changes to the Max Raids in Pokemon GO. Starting from October 31st to November 4th, players can battle against Gigantamax Gengar, a tougher version of the Pokemon, which is said to be easier to fight and catch compared to earlier introduced Max Raid Pokemon. As an added bonus, participants will receive 25,000 Stardust for each battle they win against Gigantamax Gengar during this event, encouraging players to team up and take on these giant ghosts together, making it a perfect Halloween activity.
