As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of Call of Duty under my belt, I must admit, I was initially taken aback by the slower movement mechanics in Black Ops 6 compared to Modern Warfare 19. I’ve been leapfrogging through maps since CoD4, and the change felt like a major step back. But after reading Treyarch’s developer Matt Scronce’s explanation, it all makes sense now.
On social media platforms, one of Treyarch’s developers has penned a clear and open post discussing the perceived reduction in movement speed for Call of Duty after the release of 2019’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. He also shed light on why specific features, previously popular in the Call of Duty series over many years, may not be as efficient in Black Ops 6.
‘Faster is Not Always Healthier’
As a passionate gamer, I’m excited to share some insights from a recent Twitter conversation with Treyarch’s Matt Scronce. In essence, he hinted that the movement speed was significantly reduced in Modern Warfare 19, reasoning that ‘faster doesn’t always mean better’. He elaborated, stating that this decision was made to enhance the overall gameplay experience.
When first-person and third-person viewpoints move too quickly due to excessive speed in crouching or leaning, it can create a discrepancy known as “snaking,” which has historically caused significant issues.
In Modern Warfare, the gameplay featured swift and exhilarating movements such as slide-cancelling, snaking, and jump shots which became the core strategies, later carrying over when Warzone was launched in March 2020. However, upon release, players noticed a shift towards slower, bulkier gameplay that seemed to have been toned down in terms of movement speed.
Scronce’s comments were posted in response to a video comparing Black Ops 6 and MW19, showing how much slower the game has become over the years, particularly movement mechanics like jumping.
He wrote:
In designing our game’s combat system, we deliberately avoided making jumping the best strategy, especially with spamming in mind. To accomplish this, we automatically set sway or bobbing while jumping as less effective during battles, ensuring a more balanced and strategic gameplay experience.
If you’re looking to execute a combined action of jumping while firing with precision, we offer specialized Perks and Attachments to boost your performance, similar to what we provide for sliding and diving maneuvers.
If you’ve been predominantly using jump shots throughout your playing career and have recently found yourself struggling to make successful shots, this is likely the reason behind it.
Scronce concluded by promising they consistently analyze feedback and make adjustments according to the community’s feelings, aiming for continuous improvement.
