As a longtime fan of Sucker Punch and their captivating storytelling, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia when I think about the underappreciated brilliance that is the Infamous series. It’s been far too long since we’ve seen our electromagnetic-powered heroes in action, and it’s high time they made a comeback!
In recent times, Sucker Punch has been thriving, and this momentum is anticipated to persist with the arrival of “Ghost of Yotei”, the much-anticipated sequel to “Ghost of Tsushima”. Notably, the “Ghost of Tsushima” series appears to be the main priority for Sucker Punch at present; however, there was a period when this studio was renowned for a completely distinct franchise, albeit one that was no less captivating.
It appears that the “Infamous” series, known for its impressive showcases and mature storytelling, has unfortunately been neglected by the major players in the gaming industry. The last proper release was “Infamous: Second Son” back in 2014, which took full advantage of the PS4’s enhanced capabilities over its predecessor. With such a rich superhero gameplay experience and a potential for innovation with the “Ghost of Yotei” formula, it would be a pity to let this series fade away.
The Benefits of Marrying Infamous and Ghost of Yotei
Infamous and the Ghost Games Showcase the Greatest Strengths of Sucker Punch
In the realm of gaming, Ghost of Tsushima strays somewhat from realism with its unusual special powers and hints of supernatural elements, but it generally maintains a solid foundation in reality; it’s likely that Ghost of Yotei will follow a similar pattern. On the other hand, the Infamous series is anything but grounded, as it delves deep into grandiose, magical, and sci-fi narratives and gameplay mechanics.
In other words, both games have their pros and cons. The fantastical plot of “Infamous” provides room for imaginative storylines, but the historically accurate setting of the “Ghost” series limits creativity. However, it’s worth noting that “Ghost of Tsushima” excels in portraying deep character relationships and exploring human conditions more effectively than “Infamous”, due to its ties with historical trauma and themes like honor which offer a richer context for storytelling.
A comparable pattern emerges when examining the gameplay of both series. The movement and battle mechanics in Infamous are dynamic, adaptable, and at times, downright explosive (even literally), whereas Ghost of Tsushima‘s gameplay is more restrained but precise, leading to a more intense and immersive experience. If Sucker Punch combines these two series, they might be able to harness the best aspects of each, blending them to produce something truly extraordinary.
How the Ghost Games Could Be Combined With Infamous
A literal crossover between these two franchises would be a bit overboard, but a new Sucker Punch IP, years down the road, that recontextualizes the best aspects of both Infamous and Ghost could be surprisingly great. This game would lack the urban fantasy elements of the original Infamous games, but it could instead leverage real-world mythology or folklore, either directly or in a more ambiguous way, with NPCs assigning the player-character mythical status based on their cultural beliefs, similar to how Ghost of Tsushima‘s characters christen Jin as the “Ghost” for his exploits.
From a gameplay perspective, several elements and characteristics of the “Infamous” series could significantly contribute to a scenario reminiscent of “Ghost”, such as:
- An explicit morality system
- Quicker, more fleshed-out traversal mechanics
- A better blend of ranged and close-combat options
In much the same vein, the engaging open-world structure of “Ghost of Tsushima” aligns nicely with the core mechanics of “Infamous”. It’s uncertain what Sucker Punch has in store for us next, but given their knack for captivating narratives, historically rich environments, and power-driven gameplay, a title that amalgamates these elements could shape the genre.
