A New PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Will Launch This Month With Less Storage

It’s been suggested in a recent report that a digital version of the PlayStation 5 might hit the shelves this month, albeit with a smaller memory capacity compared to its counterparts.

The document indicates that the price of the CFI-2100 console update will remain at its standard 499 euros. Typically, PlayStation 5 console revisions involve enhancements in performance and cooling, but the report doesn’t reveal any details suggesting these improvements (however, it’s assumed that there might be some, as they aren’t usually disclosed publicly).

The information in this report originates from dataminer and JSON sniffer billbil-kun of Dealabs, an individual known for accurately gathering unpublished info and data from online retail sites. As such, we have confidence in the report’s authenticity.

It’s said that the new console will release on September 13th, 2025, in Europe.

PlayStation 5 Console Revisions

Over time, the PlayStation 5 has undergone multiple revisions from PlayStation. The original version, released in 2020, came with an internal disc drive. However, in November 2023, a major update to the console occurred, introducing a new version named ‘PlayStation 5 Slim’ by its enthusiastic community.

The latest console model features a removable disc player, enabling customers to initially purchase a “digital-only” variant. At a later point, this can be upgraded with a disc drive. This modification in the console’s design has significantly reduced manufacturing and shipping expenses for Sony. Since its launch, the console has undergone some minor, unannounced adjustments aimed at further decreasing production costs.

The latest model, CFI-2100, appears to offer similar features, yet its most significant modification seems to be a decrease in internal storage from 1TB to 825GB, while maintaining the same cost.

After the existing 1TB PlayStation 5 consoles are no longer available, it might imply that Sony (PlayStation’s parent company) is planning to launch a new version of the PlayStation 5 in the future, featuring a larger storage capacity.
