A New Star Trek Movie Could Take A Familiar Approach To The Next Generation

As a lifelong Trekkie who has seen the original series premiere before I even learned to tie my own shoes, I can attest that the Kelvin Timeline films have breathed new life into the Star Trek universe. The reimagining of classic characters like Kirk, Spock, and Uhura by a fresh crop of talented actors has been nothing short of spectacular.

Exploring the cosmos: The ultimate adventure. Ever since the debut of Star Trek: The Original Series on September 8, 1966, viewers have been enthralled by the concept of a prosperous future where voyaging to distant realms with sophisticated technology is within reach. For devoted fans, Star Trek transcends beyond a mere franchise; it embodies an entire realm of potentiality. This allure stems from the futuristic gadgetry, including iconic starships, and the rich tapestry of alien civilizations and interstellar diplomacy. Nevertheless, one of the most captivating aspects of the Star Trek universe is its characters. Even casual watchers are familiar with Captain James T. Kirk, Spock, and Uhura. These timeless figures gained even more recognition with the emergence of the Star Trek Kelvin Timeline films.

It was quite barren for Star Trek content following the cancellation of “Star Trek: Enterprise” in 2005. However, things have dramatically changed since then, as characters from the original series were revived in the Kelvin Timeline films. As I write this, the Kelvin Timeline series consists of three movies: “Star Trek” (released in 2009), “Star Trek Into Darkness” (2013), and “Star Trek Beyond” (2016).

These movies don’t follow the main, or original, timeline. This allows for the stories fans adore from the original series and beyond to remain canon. At the same time, alternate versions of these beloved characters can embark on new journeys as separate entities. The impact the Kelvin films had on the TOS characters could be replicated in a movie focusing on the characters from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

The Kelvin Timeline Gave Fresh Faces to Familiar Characters

One of the fantastic aspects of the Kelvin Timeline movies is that they allowed iconic Star Trek Original Series (TOS) characters to be portrayed by a new generation of actors. For many years, these characters have been indelibly linked with their original performers, and rightfully so. It’s hard to argue against the fact that TOS was an influential and pioneering television series.

In a series as enduring as Star Trek, it’s common to see different actors take on leading roles. Just like debating who would be an ideal James Bond or discussing the best Batman, fans enjoy this speculation. The introduction of Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldaña, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, and others breathed new life into the franchise, making it more appealing to both old and new viewers. Characters like Spock have been portrayed by Ethan Peck in Discovery, Short Treks, and Strange New Worlds, while Kirk is now played by Paul Wesley in Strange New Worlds. Given this trend, why not extend the same opportunity to the cherished characters from The Next Generation?

Potential to See TNG Characters in Their Early Days

In a new series titled “Legacy“, which is expected soon, the characters from “TNG” are continued after the conclusion of “TNG“. It’s been thirty years since the original run of “TNG“, and younger viewers may not be as acquainted with these characters. By casting fresh actors to play these characters, it might generate interest in “TNG” among a new generation. This approach would also offer a chance to delve into the backstories of these characters during their youth.

Beyond this, previously established media has paved the way for delving into these characters’ pasts. For instance, Picard frequently reminisces about his cocky youth, making it intriguing to witness his transformation into the esteemed captain (later admiral) he’s recognized as. Similarly, Worf boasts a rich history with abundant lore yet unexplored. Additionally, the formative years of Jack R. Crusher and Dr. Beverly Crusher are ripe for exploration. A film series could capitalize on these opportunities, breathing new life into these cherished characters.

Is An Alternate Timeline Necessary?

If a new TNG movie series was produced, there might be a question about which timeline the films would occupy: the original (prime) timeline, the Kelvin timeline, or perhaps a completely new one? This decision could hinge on how much the writers wish to explore different character interpretations. For instance, the movie series might take place in the original timeline if the creators choose to adhere to the established canon. However, it’s also possible that they might want to deviate from this path, in which case it would be fascinating to see how the TNG crew are influenced by the events of the Kelvin timeline. Creating a new timeline could pose challenges given what’s already been established, but if executed skillfully, it could certainly work. There’s definitely an audience interest in multiverse narratives.

It seems unlikely that the Star Trek franchise will cease creating new projects in the near future, giving devoted fans ample opportunity to fantasize. One wonders, who among today’s young actors could embody characters like William Riker, Data, or Geordi La Forge? There must be promising talent out there ready to take on such roles and contribute to more TNG narratives in the cinema. For now, fans can only indulge their imagination.
