A Pokemon Center Employee Has Died After Being Stabbed in Tokyo

A worker at a Pokemon Center sadly died after being attacked while on the job. The incident was very frightening for customers, and emergency services received many calls for help.

Although violent crime is rare in Japan, the video game industry has unfortunately experienced threats and instances of violence. For instance, Nintendo had to cancel an event in 2024 after receiving threats against its employees and those planning to attend. Individual game developers have also been subjected to verbal abuse and death threats, leading them to publicly ask for the harassment to stop.

Warning: Description of violent acts follow.

Pokemon Center Employee is Attacked and Killed On the Job

On March 26th, around 7 pm in Japan, emergency services (110, the Japanese equivalent of 911) received numerous calls reporting a stabbing at a shopping center in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. Although initial reports suggested the attack occurred throughout the mall, it was limited to the Pokemon Center. Witnesses and security footage show a man in his 20s entered the Pokemon Center, located in the Sunshine City building, carrying two knives. He immediately approached a female employee, also believed to be in her 20s, who was working behind the counter and stabbed her in the neck. The attacker then used one of the knives on himself. Both the employee and the attacker were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, but unfortunately, neither survived.

The reason for the attack is still unknown, and police haven’t said whether the attacker and victim knew each other. They haven’t released the names of those involved either. Despite the initial panic, the attacker didn’t appear to target anyone else, suggesting this was a deliberate act against a specific person. We can expect more details to be released soon. The Ikebukuro Pokemon Center has announced a temporary closure to help with the investigation and support its employees’ well-being. There’s no word yet on when the store will reopen, so fans are asked to follow official updates.

This was likely a terrifying experience for everyone involved. Because it’s spring break in Japan, there’s a strong possibility that children were in the store when the attack happened. While the store will reopen eventually, those who were there at the time may be deeply affected for a long time.

Although the recent attack probably wasn’t directly caused by the Pokémon series, this isn’t the first time violence has occurred around it. There have been several reports of Pokémon GO players getting into fights in Japan, sometimes resulting in physical attacks. Additionally, people have been threatened or harmed during robberies targeting Pokémon cards, which can be quite valuable. These incidents haven’t been limited to Japan; similar events have been reported in many countries. Luckily, most cases haven’t been serious, with injuries typically being minor, but it’s still concerning to see this happening.
