A Resident Evil-Esque DLC for The Last of Us Part 2 Could Be a Layup

For nearly five years now, there have been numerous opportunities for story-based downloadable content (DLC) in the style of “The Last of Us Part 1’s Left Behind” for “The Last of Us Part 2”. In fact, Left Behind went beyond just being DLC; it was a significant narrative expansion that was tightly woven into the main game and offered valuable insights about Ellie. Given its importance to the overall story of The Last of Us, Left Behind rightfully deserves recognition as an essential part of the series. However, it appears less probable today that “The Last of Us Part 2” would receive a DLC of its own, despite one idea being particularly appealing.

Given that Tommy embarks on a solo journey through Seattle, with Ellie and Dina occasionally joining or crossing paths with him, it seems quite logical for The Last of Us Part 2 to introduce a downloadable content (DLC) featuring Tommy, similar to Resident Evil 4’s Separate Ways DLC starring Ada Wong. Unfortunately, the upcoming Complete edition of the game suggests that there may be no further instalments in the franchise. However, while Left Behind DLC for The Last of Us Part 1 served as a prequel and complemented the main story, a DLC for Part 2 could provide additional insights without necessarily advancing or altering the existing narrative.

A Last of Us Part 2 DLC with Tommy Has Already Written Itself

In a potential expansion for “The Last of Us Part 2”, the story might begin with Tommy writing a note to his wife, Maria, before setting out to seek his retribution. As players trace Tommy’s path through clues left behind, such as a trail of WLF corpses, it becomes clear that they have already experienced Tommy’s journey in “Part 2”. On the first day in Seattle, Ellie and Dina follow these grisly trails, while Abby and Manny cross paths with Tommy on the third day.

In the meantime, pieces of the puzzle fall into place with hints from the environment and radio broadcasts. It’s noticeable that there isn’t an NPC ally accompanying players on their journey through WLF barricades as Ellie did, and it would be thrilling to take control of Tommy when he overpowers two Wolves, forcing them to write the East 1 gate code in blood.

In a DLC like this, we can expect repetitions of levels and encounters, but they would still be thrilling to go through as Tommy. This setup could also draw inspiration from another beat in the Resident Evil franchise. Since Resident Evil 3 takes place before and after the events of Resident Evil 2, it allows players to witness the initial onslaught of zombies and lickers at the Raccoon City Police Department, a period that occurs prior to Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield’s arrival.

In a potential expansion for “The Last of Us Part 2”, Tommy, Jesse, and Ellie might first encounter each other at the aquarium on Day 3. Afterward, they would return to the theater, only to be caught off guard by Abby and Lev. Given that “The Last of Us Complete” is out now and the series may be drawing to a close, this could be the ideal moment for such a DLC. Naughty Dog wouldn’t need to search far since they already have the storyline from “No Return” to draw upon for execution.

The Last of Us Part 2’s No Return Should Be a Segue for a Tommy DLC

It’s not entirely unimaginable that Tommy could be introduced as a downloadable character (DLC) in the future, given that he is an existing playable character in the roguelike mode of The Last of Us Part 2, and his model uses Abby’s movement animations. If this happens, Tommy might have a distinct gameplay style reminiscent of his appearance in No Return, where he lacks the ability to dodge but excels in marksmanship, with upgrades being boosted by supplements.

As a player in No Return, I can tell you that Tommy is an incredibly challenging character to rack up a top daily score with due to his toughness and infuriating nature. Factors like stuns, stealth, melee attacks, headshots, and more play a crucial role when it comes to competing against him.

Regrettably, after five years, it seems extremely unlikely for a Part 2 DLC featuring Tommy to be released in the Last of Us series. For now, experiencing Tommy in the game No Return could potentially satiate your desire for more.
