Ever since its launch in 2013, the Rick & Morty series has flourished into a multifaceted franchise that includes comic books, fast food tie-ins, movie appearances, and video game promotions. Now, it’s set to debut its first standalone spin-off series as well.
It’s hard to believe that Adult Swim and those in charge didn’t foresee Rick & Morty becoming a significant cultural movement when it premiered on December 2, 2013. After all, why would they predict that an adult-oriented cartoon inspired by a Back to the Future parody movie would turn into a massive success? Yet, that’s precisely what happened as Rick & Morty transformed into a thriving franchise with merchandise tie-ins, numerous accolades, and an enthusiastic fanbase that may be a bit too energetic for some people’s taste. The presence of popular actors like Chris Parnell, Sarah Chalke, and Tom Kenny in the recording studio has undoubtedly contributed to building such a passionate fanbase. One of the show’s supporting characters is even getting their very own spin-off series since they first appeared on the show back in 2015.
At the Rick & Morty event held at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, it was revealed that President Andre Curtis, voiced by Keith David, will star in his own spin-off series called President Curtis. David himself was present at the panel to share this exciting news about the upcoming animated show. Michael Ouweleen, president of Adult Swim, expressed that they would have approved the series even if it had no connection to Rick and Morty, highlighting how remarkable President Andre Curtis is as a character. The team has also developed an intriguing world for this new series, which is entertaining on its own merit. They can’t wait for everyone to see it. Stephanie Beatriz from Encanto and Jim Rash from Community will join David in the voice cast of the show.
