A Rumored PS3 Remaster May Already Be Missing a Major Opportunity

Highlights

  • A Tales of Xillia remaster is rumored for modern platforms, potentially bringing the classic 2011 JRPG to PS4, PS5, Xbox, and Switch.
  • However, Bandai Namco has been criticized for remaster flaws before, and there is a good chance for another mistake this time. Specifically, the sequel could be left unremastered.
  • Bandai Namco would ideally bundle Tales of Xillia 1 and 2 together for a complete story experience on current-gen hardware, but leaked info currently only points to the original being brought to modern hardware.

As a longtime fan of the Tales of series, I’m thrilled to hear rumors of a potential remaster for one of my all-time favorite games, Tales of Xillia. Having played the original on my trusty PlayStation 3 back in 2011, I can only imagine how amazing it would be to revisit this masterpiece with updated graphics and potentially even improved gameplay mechanics on modern platforms.

Lately, there have been hints on the websites of several Czech and Slovak retailers suggesting a possible remastered version of “Tales of Xillia.” If accurate, this long-awaited re-release is said to make the 2011 JRPG available on contemporary platforms such as PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch. Excited fans of the “Tales of” series will be eagerly anticipating this rumored upgrade if it turns out to be true.

Although the anticipated remaster of “Tales of Xillia” could bring exciting developments, it’s essential to remember that potential downsides may accompany this news. As of now, we can only speculate about the possible contents of this rumored game since an official announcement is yet to be made. The leaked box art and title suggest some potentially disappointing aspects.

The Rumored Tales of Xillia Remaster Could Fumble the Bag in One Major Way

Tales of Xillia is a Notable PS3 Exclusive

Tales of Xillia, released in 2011 as a Japan-exclusive for the PlayStation 3, is the thirteenth major installment in Bandai Namco’s popular Tales of series. Each game in this franchise tells its own unique story that doesn’t necessarily connect to previous titles. Although it came to North America and Europe a few months before the launch of PS4 and Xbox One, Tales of Xillia never made an appearance on those platforms or PC. To this day, this highly-regarded RPG continues to be available exclusively for PlayStation 3.

Although it initially came out exclusively for a platform nearing its end, “Tales of Xillia” proved to be a successful venture for Bandai Namco, garnering both critical acclaim and commercial success. The game managed to sell over a million units globally, an impressive accomplishment for a less popular franchise. Consequently, Bandai Namco chose to produce a sequel titled “Tales of Xillia 2,” which hit the Japanese market in 2012, just one year following the original’s release. Unfortunately, like its predecessor, this PS3 JRPG was not made available outside of Japan until 2014.

Bandai Namco Should Bundle Remasters of Tales of Xillia 1 and 2 Together

Due to the absence of native PlayStation 3 backcompatibility on PlayStation 4 and 5, playing exclusive titles from the PS3 era can be quite a challenge. Therefore, if Bandai Namco intends to remaster “Tales of Xillia,” it would be beneficial for them to include “Tales of Xillia 2” in the package as well. This way, players won’t have to endure the long wait for the sequel to be released on newer platforms. Additionally, telling the complete story of both games requires having access to both titles on modern systems.

Unfortunately, based on the suspected title and initial artwork for the reported rerelease of Tales of Xillia, it appears that this remaster will merely be an enhanced version of the original game in the series with no additional content. This may disappoint fans if true, but given that last year’s Tales of Symphonia remaster didn’t include its sequel either, it wouldn’t be entirely unexpected. However, for the benefit of fans, it would be ideal if Bandai Namco released both versions of Tales of Xillia on contemporary platforms at once, whether as individual purchases or as a bundle.
