A rare Pokémon trading card – a 1st Edition Kabuto signed by the popular collector known as Kabuto King – recently sold for $51,100 at auction. What makes this sale even more special is that Kabuto King announced all the money raised would be donated to charity.
I’ve always loved Kabuto, the Shellfish Pokemon! It first showed up way back in the original Pokemon Red and Blue games. You used to have to revive a Dome Fossil on Cinnabar Island to get one, which was so cool. It evolves into Kabutops at level 40, and its partner Pokemon, Omanyte, came from a Helix Fossil. I remember being drawn to Kabuto’s design – that brown shell, dark belly, and those glowing red eyes! It even made its way into the Pokemon Trading Card Game with the Fossil expansion back in ’97 (and ’99 for us in the US!). More recently, it’s been featured in the Scarlet and Violet: 151 set as a Stage 1 Fighting Pokemon you evolve from an Antique Dome Fossil. Honestly, Kabuto and Kabutops are some of the strongest fossil Pokemon out there, and they can be really effective in competitive battles!
A Signed 1st Edition Kabuto Card Sells for an Unusually High Amount
Kabuto King, a Pokemon TCG collector, recently became well-known for having a massive collection of 1st Edition Kabuto cards from the Fossil set – 1,799 cards as of December 5, 2025. Capitalizing on this popularity, Kabuto King decided to auction off a signed 1st Edition Kabuto card from the Fossil expansion to raise money for a good cause. The online auction, held from December 4th to 7th, quickly gained attention, with bids reaching $12,400 on the first day. The card eventually sold for an impressive $51,100 on eBay.
Rare Pokémon cards can be quite valuable, but a recent sale of a Kabuto King card was exceptionally high. Before the auction, similar Kabuto cards in good condition were selling for around $1. However, the winning bid came in at $51,100 from a Twitter user called cards.fun, who beat out Logan Paul’s offer of $34,700. Kabuto King publicly thanked Paul for his generous bid and for helping to promote the card online.
Kabuto King announced that 100% of the money raised from the card auction would be donated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Before sending the card to the winning bidder, it will be professionally authenticated by PSA. eBay also agreed to donate their usual fees from the Pokémon card auction. Kabuto King expressed gratitude to everyone who took part in the fundraising event.
Rare Pokemon Cards Remain a Valuable Commodity
Even after almost 30 years, Pokémon cards are still highly sought after by collectors and fans. However, Pokémon Trading Card Game products are frequently targeted by people who resell them at inflated prices. Recently, in Japan, listings for a rare card, Mega Gengar ex, from the upcoming Mega Dream expansion appeared on eBay for around $900 – and this was before the cards were even released on November 28th. This means the sellers were listing cards they didn’t actually have yet.
It’s been tough for Pokémon card players to find the cards they want because of scalpers, but stores are now taking steps to prevent them from buying up all the stock. There’s also been talk online that Pokémon might bring back popular cards and Pokémon to celebrate the 30th anniversary, and fans are hoping to see Pokémon like Kabuto and other fossil Pokémon in future card sets. Whether or not that will happen is still unknown.
