A Tribute to Insurgency and Six Days in Fallujah Developer Jeremy Faucomprez

The first-person shooter (FPS) community is mourning the loss of Jeremy Faucomprez, known online as Mxthe, who passed away on March 6th. He was a talented game developer and most recently worked as a senior game designer on the tactical shooter, Six Days in Fallujah.

Friends and family of Faucomprez have revealed that he died by suicide, hoping to raise awareness and offer support to others facing similar struggles.

Game developer Michael Tsarouhas shared news of Jeremy Faucomprez’s death in a public statement. Tsarouhas and Faucomprez had collaborated on several projects together since 2012.

Over his 35-year career, Jeremy Faucomprez worked on many of the most popular and well-remembered shooting games of the past few years.

Half-Life 2, Fallujah, and Mental Health

Faucomprez became well-known for his Half-Life 2 mod, Underhell. It’s a distinctive horror game—though never fully completed—that mixes intense action with the slow, psychological tension of games like Silent Hill.

Jeremy’s impressive work on Underhell led to a position at New World Interactive, where he contributed to the development of popular games like Insurgency, Day of Infamy, and Insurgency: Sandstorm. Sandstorm, in particular, has been highly praised, earning a ‘Very Positive’ rating on Steam with over 130,000 reviews.

Insurgency: Standstorm successfully combines realistic tactical gameplay with a fast-moving experience, something few other games have managed to achieve. This focus on a compelling balance is a hallmark of developer Jeremy Faucomprez’s work.

After finding great success at New World Interactive, Jeremy joined Highwire Games, encouraged by Michael Tsarouhas. He became a senior game designer there and played a key role in creating what I consider the most realistic and engaging depiction of urban warfare ever made.

Six Days in Fallujah is a remarkable game thanks to a combination of factors, but the mission design by Faucomprez is what truly makes it special.

Insurgency: Standstorm successfully combines realistic tactical gameplay with a fast-moving experience, something few other games have managed to achieve. This quality is a hallmark of all projects led by Jeremy Faucomprez.

Even though the game doesn’t have as many maps as some other tactical shooters, each environment feels different every time you play. The game consistently creates intense moments – walking through a door is always nerve-wracking, the combat is fast-paced and exciting, and it strikes a great balance between chaotic action and tense, quiet anticipation.

It’s been a long time since a game captured the intense, squad-based teamwork of Star Wars: Republic Commando, and I found myself completely hooked, replaying each mission countless times.

The upcoming Spring update for Six Days in Fallujah will feature a new mission completed by Jeremy, who recently passed away. While the update is expected to be a positive step towards the game’s release, Jeremy’s death casts a sad shadow over it.

Six Days in Fallujah is different from most shooting games because it focuses on the emotional and mental toll of fighting in a city, and it’s based on real stories from soldiers who lived through the battle. While many soldiers left Fallujah physically unharmed, they later struggled with mental health issues – a heartbreaking reality exemplified by the story of Jeremy Faucomprez.

Jeremy Faucomprez will be deeply missed and remembered for his incredible contributions to many beloved games. He was a remarkably talented game developer whose life was tragically cut short after a long struggle with depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder.

Please keep Jeremy’s family and friends – Michael, Tom, and Charly – in your thoughts during this sad time. It’s important to check in on your friends, and if you’re going through a tough time, don’t hesitate to ask for help, even if you feel like you’re bothering people. Reach out to those you trust.

Play Six Days in Fallujah, the final project from Jeremy Faucomprez, now on Steam with a 35% discount until April 19th. An update including his last mission is planned for release in the next few months.
