As someone who lived through the Y2K scare and can vividly remember the anticipation (and relief) that followed, I’m genuinely excited about the upcoming horror comedy “Y2K” from A24. Being a fan of Kyle Mooney’s work on Saturday Night Live and his directorial debut, I eagerly await this unique blend of humor and horror, especially with Jonah Hill as a producer.
Towards the end of 1999, people were deeply anxious about the future, filled with genuine fear. An upcoming horror-comedy, titled “Y2K,” produced by A24, is poking fun at that time period, and a new trailer for it has just been released, with its release date approaching soon.
According to JoBlo, Y2K marks Kyle Mooney’s debut as a director. Mooney is well recognized for his tenure on Saturday Night Live. Jonah Hill serves as producer, while Mooney himself features in the movie. The film boasts an impressive ensemble that includes Mason Gooding (from Scream 2022 and Scream 6), Rachel Zegler, Jaeden Martell, Alicia Silverstone, The Kid Laroi, Fred Durst, and Tim Heidecker.
Based on the trailer, horror enthusiasts get a nostalgic glimpse of an AOL dial-up sound and a news report by former President Bill Clinton attempting to allay American fears about computer problems when the clock struck 2000 from 1999. The plot then unfolds around a group of teenagers who decide to throw a massive New Year’s Eve party on December 31, 1999. Despite their efforts to enjoy themselves, an undercurrent of fear about what might happen next lingers among the characters.
In the vein of “This Is The End” and “Bodies Bodies Bodies,” the movie “Y2K” keeps its characters in a humorous and turbulent setting. While single-location horror films can be spine-chilling, a well-executed horror comedy set within one location can be equally effective. With their lives on the line, the characters must lean on each other, their intellect, and instincts to survive. However, given that they’re in a party atmosphere, escaping becomes quite challenging.
In the course of the story, the characters come to understand that technology, rather than being beneficial, is causing havoc instead. Instead of fleeing from a murderer or battling for their lives, they find themselves grappling with these ominous devices that appear to possess intelligence of their own. This creative concept for a movie promises excitement and originality, as the trailer indicates that the actors delivered impressive performances. While Christmas is an intriguing setting for a horror film, New Year’s Eve offers its own unique charm as a backdrop. Given that December 31st, 1999 was no ordinary New Year’s Eve, this movie idea is particularly intelligent and adds a greater dose of drama and tension than usual.
According to an interview with IndieWire, Mooney initially believed that the final hours of 1999 would bring about doom, but fortunately, it turned out otherwise. In simpler terms, he thought that the last night of 1999 would be catastrophic, but luckily, it wasn’t.
Whenever the topic arises, you express immediate disappointment, saying it fell short of expectations and didn’t live up to the hype. Initially, we were anticipating something grand, but it failed to deliver.
Y2K will be in theaters on December 6th, 2024.
