Activision Devs Admit Black Ops 6 Anti-Cheat Wasn’t Good Enough

As a long-time fan and seasoned Call of Duty player, I must admit that this latest admission from Activision about the shortcomings of their anti-cheat systems in Black Ops 6 has left me feeling like a lone soldier in a battlefield filled with cheaters. It’s been an uphill struggle trying to climb the Ranked Play leaderboards without getting ambushed by these nefarious operators.

On their official Call of Duty blog, Activision has shared insights into the future plans for Team RICOCHET, the team responsible for COD’s anti-cheat systems. The post specifically discusses the debut of Black Ops 6 and the subsequent rollout of Ranked Play, which unfortunately became a breeding ground for cheaters, making progress extremely challenging and almost unattainable.

To put it straight, the team acknowledged that the anti-cheat measures implemented in Black Ops 6 fell short of expectations.

Missing the Mark

In the blog post on the COD site, the team wrote:

Following several upgrades, our systems are currently operating more effectively across all operational modes. Regrettably, we fell short of our target when integrating RICOCHET Anti-Cheat during the debut of Season 01, especially in terms of Ranked Play.

Across various social media platforms, top-tier gamers globally voiced their concerns about the ranked play mode, often sharing videos that depicted frequent encounters with hackers and unsavory players.

Further to the statement above, Activision went on to mention the obvious:

As a dedicated gaming enthusiast, I get the allure of climbing up those Ranked Play leaderboards for the fame and recognition. However, it’s no secret that such an appealing environment can be exploited by cheaters. To ensure a fair and engaging competitive experience for our players, my team has been relentlessly working to counteract this issue and establish the arena we all crave.

For this purpose, a number of significant modifications are being made now. Alongside the 19,000 accounts that have already been suspended, the team is vowing to speed up the process of banning rule violators more quickly. Team RICOCHET is also stepping up the learning process for their AI-based detection systems, enhancing their capabilities.

In simple terms, the core software and security features of RICOCHET will undergo significant enhancements, which will be introduced concurrently with Seasons 2 and 3 for both Black Ops 6 and Warzone.

The blog concluded by asking everyone to continue reporting any instances of cheaters they encounter, as it’s important to remember that these automated systems have their limits.
