As a huge magical girl fan, I was so thrilled when Sailor Moon came back to Adult Swim! Sadly, that happiness isn’t lasting very long. It’s now official: Dragon Ball Z Kai is taking over the timeslot starting April 13th. I know a lot of us are bummed that Sailor Moon is getting pulled so quickly after its return, even though Dragon Ball Z Kai fans will be excited to finally see some new episodes. It’s a bit of a bittersweet moment, honestly!
Both Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z first aired on Cartoon Network’s Toonami block way back in 1998. Fans who didn’t enjoy the extra content in the original Dragon Ball Z were excited when Dragon Ball Z Kai, a streamlined and remastered version, arrived on Adult Swim’s Toonami in 2014. Viewers have overwhelmingly praised the series, appreciating the updated look of their favorite moments and characters. This has led some to hope that other classic shows will also get a chance to shine.
Dragon Ball Z Kai Will Replace Sailor Moon on Adult Swim Starting on April 13
Cartoon Network announced that Dragon Ball Z Kai will begin airing in place of Sailor Moon on Monday, April 13th, at 5:00 AM Eastern Time. Sailor Moon had recently returned with reruns starting on March 9th, and its removal has upset many fans who were excited to see it back on TV. Good news for Dragon Ball Z Kai fans, though: the show isn’t stuck repeating the Frieza Saga this time! The first episode, ‘The Angry Super Saiyan! Goku Throws Down the Gauntlet,’ is just six episodes away from the beginning of the popular Cell Saga, suggesting Adult Swim has regained the rights to air that portion of the series.
When Dragon Ball Z Kai first aired in 2009, it was a huge hit. This updated version of the classic anime streamlined the story, making it easier to follow, and included new music and voice acting. And for fans looking for more current anime, Cartoon Network’s Toonami block is still popular in 2026, showcasing exciting series like Dandadan, Blue Lock, Tokyo Revengers, and One Piece.
Fans are frustrated that Adult Swim has once again stopped airing Sailor Moon. Many feel the beloved series is constantly being taken off the air. While Sailor Moon was hugely popular in the late 90s and early 2000s, it was originally removed from TV in 2001. It briefly returned in the US in May 2024 as part of Toonami Rewind and aired on Adult Swim until June 2025, but this latest run was short-lived.

For almost thirty years, Dragon Ball Z has been a cornerstone of Toonami, but fans who watched the channel growing up are also hoping to see other classic anime return, like Tenchi Muyo, Outlaw Star, The Big O, YuYu Hakusho, and Rurouni Kenshin. Although a comeback doesn’t seem likely right now, fans are using the internet to make their wishes known, and it’s unclear if these shows will ever be broadcast on American television again for a new audience.
