PowerA is known for making well-designed, alternative controllers, and they often stand out with unique designs and partnerships with popular brands.

I was excited to test out PowerA’s new Advantage Wireless Controllers for the Nintendo Switch 2. Official Nintendo accessories can be quite pricey – another set of Joy-Cons costs almost $90! If you’re hesitant to spend a lot on a controller from a third-party company, I can assure you this one is worth considering. Here’s my complete review of the PowerA Advantage Wireless Controller for Switch 2.

Pro-kemon, Gotta Catch ‘Em All!

Everything about this controller, from the box it comes in to the controller itself, feels high-quality. The PowerA Advantage Wireless Controller truly lives up to its ‘Pro’ name. I tested the Pokémon: Mega Evolutions version, but it’s also available in a classic ‘Black’ color, similar to the official Switch Pro controller, and a bright ‘Mario & Friends’ design that any Mario enthusiast would love.

As a huge Pokémon fan, I absolutely needed this Mega Evolution controller! It’s just stunning to look at. The design is really clever – it breaks down the front into sections featuring Lucario, Pikachu, and Mewtwo. They all come together and blend seamlessly with these amazing colors, and the whole thing is built into this super-smooth controller surface. Honestly, running your hands over it is like experiencing ASMR through architecture – it’s that satisfying!

The controller’s Y, X, A, and B buttons are a stylish purple, matching Mewtwo’s colors. The top of the controller is a bright yellow that curves around the edges, and includes a USB-C charging port in the center. You’ll spend most of your time using the analog sticks, and these have a textured, grippy surface – a significant improvement over the smoother sticks on the more expensive Pro controller, giving you better control.

This controller is impressively lightweight and feels great to hold. The buttons are satisfyingly clicky and respond quickly. My only slight concern with the design is the placement of the main buttons – they’re all arranged in a single line across the bottom. This is different from other PowerA Switch controllers I’ve used. I often found myself instinctively reaching for the ‘+’ button in the center, only to find nothing there. However, this is a minor issue, and you quickly adjust to the layout.

Pro Performance Across The Board

The PowerA Advantage Wireless Switch 2 Controller costs $69.99, which is significantly less than the official Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller at $84.99. After extensive testing with the Pokémon: Mega Evolutions version, I don’t believe the extra $15 for the official controller is worth it, especially since you also miss out on the unique and interesting designs PowerA offers.

The biggest difference between the two controllers is battery life. The official controller lasts around 40 hours, while the PowerA model lasts about 30. Whether the extra cost is worth those few extra hours is up to you. Personally, I charge my controller often and always have a USB-C cable nearby just in case.

PowerA has also thrown in a 10ft / 3m USB-C charging cable as a bonus.

I tested this controller with several of my Nintendo Switch games – Mario Kart, Pokémon Scarlet, and Super Mario Party Jamboree – and it worked perfectly. It connected to my Switch 2 quickly and functioned just like an official Pro controller. Plus, it has customizable buttons, letting you change the controls to suit your preferences. For example, if a button is hard to reach, you can easily move its function to one of the rear GR/GL buttons.

The GR and GL buttons are located on the back of the controller handles, easily accessible with your middle fingers. These buttons let you customize the controller settings on the fly. It also features standard real-time sensors, motion controls, and a dedicated C Button for Switch 2 GameChat.

Verdict

I think this is my new go-to controller for the Nintendo Switch 2. The analog sticks are incredibly comfortable, and the controller feels smooth, lightweight, and great to hold. It performs exactly as it should, and unless you really need extra battery life, the PowerA Advantage Wireless Controllers are an excellent choice.
