This article contains spoilers from Naruto.
Naruto is consistently ranked among the most popular anime series worldwide. It’s a hugely influential show that helped bring anime to a wider audience. Along with One Piece and Bleach, it formed what’s known as the ‘Big Three,’ and many consider Naruto to have had the biggest impact in Western countries of the three, at least until the series concluded.
Even though it finished airing nearly nine years ago, Naruto remains incredibly popular and is still discussed as enthusiastically as when it was new. The series is truly exceptional and enjoyed by fans of all ages. While the original Naruto story concluded almost a decade ago, the world continues through its sequel, Boruto, meaning there’s still plenty more to explore.
While Boruto hasn’t resonated with fans as a sequel, the Naruto universe still has a lot to offer. After nearly a decade since the original series ended, it’s time for a new Naruto anime that lives up to the legacy.
Naruto Has Been Absent From The Anime Scene For Too Long
- Naruto Anime Deserves A Proper Comeback
- A New Series Could Be Set In The Blank Period
Masashi Kishimoto’s Naruto series concluded in 2014, and the anime adaptation finished in 2017. The follow-up series, Boruto, didn’t quite resonate with fans and was eventually paused by Studio Pierrot. Since then, there haven’t been any new anime releases in the Naruto universe, which is disappointing given the franchise’s huge popularity worldwide. It’s notable that even Dragon Ball recently returned with new content in 2024, while Naruto fans are still waiting.
You’re unlike anyone I’ve ever met. You’re not just a regular ninja, and you’re different even from those who contain tailed beasts. You’re human, but in a way, you remind me of Jura and myself.
Naruto is a hugely popular and profitable series, and it feels like a missed opportunity to not create more content. The story Kishimoto built has so much potential left to explore, and fans are eager to see what happens next. Continuing the series would be a win for both Shueisha, the publisher, and Studio Pierrot, the animation studio.
Bringing Naruto back would be a success for both the anime’s creators and its fans. Many viewers are hoping for a brand new Naruto series, separate from Boruto. While Boruto is popular and will likely continue with the Two Blue Vortex storyline, a lot of fans would prefer to see more of the original Naruto’s adventures.
Naruto Deserves A New Anime To Replace Boruto
Although Boruto has had its moments, the way it’s treated the original characters from Naruto is disappointing. Despite some strengths, Boruto hasn’t lived up to being a proper sequel. The series has shown a lack of respect for Naruto and Sasuke, and largely sidelined most of the original cast, leading many fans to feel it doesn’t deserve to be considered a true continuation of the Naruto story. While fans often recognize these issues, they still enjoy what the series does with its new characters.
This isn’t the story of a boy dreaming of becoming Hokage. That was my father’s path. This is my own story—the story of Boruto Uzumaki, as told in the first chapter of Boruto.
Even if you’ve never seen Naruto, Boruto can still be an enjoyable anime. However, as a continuation of the Naruto story, it falls short in several ways, and that’s why a fresh Naruto anime series is needed. There are two ways to approach a new Naruto anime: one option is to create a series that picks up after the events of Naruto Shippuden.
This could happen seamlessly due to the significant time jump between the end of Shippuden and the start of Boruto.
After more than a decade since the original series ended, there’s plenty of room for a new Naruto anime. Another possibility would be to create a fresh adaptation of the entire Naruto story, which would also be great.
A Naruto Sequel Would Be The Best Case Scenario
Naruto Could Come Back With A Brand New Series
For many Naruto fans, the ideal continuation of the series would be a new anime focusing on Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura, and Kakashi. This would pick up where Naruto Shippuden left off, exploring the ten-year gap between that series’ ending and the start of Boruto. This ‘blank period’ is a mystery to fans, who are eager to see how the characters developed and what adventures they had during those years.
The new Boruto series offers a great opportunity to introduce powerful new villains, and having Kishimoto contribute could really elevate the show. He could provide Studio Pierrot with fresh ideas to create a compelling series with challenging opponents for Naruto and Sasuke that fans will love. This approach could be similar to how Dragon Ball continued with ‘Dragon Ball Super’ after the original manga ended, with Toriyama offering guidance. While ‘Super’ didn’t quite reach the heights of the original, it was still enjoyable and remains popular. If Kishimoto is willing to participate, Naruto could follow a similar path with a new anime series.
Naruto Could Also Get An Anime Remake Like One Piece
Another option would be to remake the Naruto anime, like what happened with One Piece. The original Naruto anime is quite old, having started in 2003 – that makes it over two decades old now. It also contains a lot of filler episodes, roughly half the series, which can be frustrating for viewers. Plus, some episodes have poor animation quality, and the sound design feels dated.
Fans are hoping for a remake of the Naruto anime, especially after a clip showcasing updated animation appeared during the series’ 20th anniversary celebration. With the popular series One Piece also receiving a remake from WIT Studio, many believe it’s Naruto’s turn. A new Naruto anime would revitalize the franchise and attract a wider audience. While the original series is still beloved, a fresh take from a new generation of animators would be exciting and give fans the high-quality version they deserve.
Boruto: Two Blue Vortex is the continuation of the Boruto story, created by Mikio Ikemoto and with supervision from Masashi Kishimoto. Set three years after a major event, the series follows Boruto Uzumaki as he strives to protect the world, alongside his brother Kawaki. Chapter 30 is scheduled to be released on January 20, 2026, at 10 AM EST / 3 PM UTC. Fans can read it for free on the Manga Plus and Shonen Jump apps.
