This article contains spoilers from One Piece’s Elbaf Arc.
One Piece features a wide range of amazing abilities, and after the timeskip, the author, Oda, has focused heavily on Haki, a spiritual power with many uses. Haki comes from a person’s spirit and can be used to sharpen senses (Observation Haki), strengthen attacks and defense (Armament Haki), or, in the case of a rare few with strong wills, to dominate opponents with pure willpower (Conqueror’s Haki).
Haki, a power first fully revealed in One Piece about 15 years ago, has had its capabilities gradually explained by the author, Oda. However, in chapter 1165, Oda took things further, showing the full extent of Haki’s potential. To unlock this power, one must understand the fundamental nature of Haki and learn to control its density. Characters like Roger and Garp, who can manipulate how dense their Haki is, are capable of overwhelming any opponent.
Oda Confirms Haki With Mass Can Overcome All Barriers In One Piece
One Piece chapter 1165 introduced a new idea: Haki having ‘mass’. This concept is a bit unclear since Oda didn’t fully explain what he means by Haki’s ‘mass’. According to the chapter, the amount of Haki someone possesses is crucial for defeating powerful opponents. Different types of Haki also have different abilities.
Roger told Garp that their biggest weakness was simply not having enough raw power – specifically, a lack of strength in their Haki.
I’ve noticed something interesting about Haki in battles. It seems Armament Haki is really effective against Devil Fruit powers, kind of like a direct counter. But Conqueror’s Haki? That’s a whole different level – it massively increases both your attack and defense. The tricky part is, if someone else is skilled with Haki too, these abilities usually just bounce off each other – they can’t break through a strong Haki defense.
In One Piece chapter 1165, it’s revealed that Roger and Garp initially couldn’t harm Rocks D. Xebec, even when using both Armament and Conqueror’s Haki. Roger then figured out the solution: overwhelming power through a massive concentration of Haki. Essentially, they needed to unleash the full extent of their Haki, holding nothing back, to overcome Rocks’ abilities.
Conqueror’s Haki With Mass Can Bypass Immortality
When Luffy encountered Scopper Gaban again in Elbaf’s underworld, Gaban advised him to focus on how he uses his Conqueror’s Haki, explaining it was the key to overcoming the Holy Knights’ immortality. What he meant wasn’t clear then, but now it’s understood that Gaban was telling Luffy to master controlling a large amount of Haki.
Luffy, be careful with your Conqueror’s Haki. Remember, these opponents can still be defeated – they’re not invincible! – Scopper Gaban
The Holy Knights are powered by Imu, and to defeat them, Luffy needs to significantly strengthen the amount of Haki he uses in each attack. Standard Haki won’t be effective – they’ll simply recover from any damage. To truly harm them, Luffy must increase the volume of Haki he projects, which will finally overcome their ability to regenerate and effectively counter their seeming immortality.
Strong Barriers Can Be Created With Full Power Haki
Oda recently showed us another incredible ability of Conqueror’s Haki in One Piece: creating a protective shield. We saw Big Mom use this during the Wano arc, but Xebec demonstrated a much stronger version against Rocks and Roger. By surrounding themselves with Supreme King Haki, a person can block all incoming attacks, provided their Haki is powerful enough. For Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, and the rest of the crew to effectively defend against the World Government’s strongest fighters, they need to master this technique.
One Piece will have a break next week, and a new chapter will be released on November 23, 2025. Chapter 1166 will be available to read for free on Manga Plus.
