After Call of the Mountain, a Gameplay Option Should Be in Horizon 3

As a long-time fan of the Horizon franchise and someone who has spent countless hours exploring Guerrilla’s breathtaking worlds, I can confidently say that it’s high time for a change. The third-person perspective has been the norm for far too long, and it’s about time we switch things up!

The Horizon series has proven to be a hit for Sony, which has spawned offshoots such as a VR title called “Call of the Mountain” and a LEGO game. Given its unique approach to gameplay, Guerrilla Games should continue exploring virtual reality storytelling, especially with the upcoming Horizon game. To enhance player experience, they could offer an option for switching between first-person and third-person modes in the next Horizon game.

Switching Between First-Person and Third-Person

Lately, it’s become common to see games offering both third-person and first-person perspectives. For instance, Rockstar incorporated this feature in Red Dead Redemption 2, as did Capcom with Resident Evil Village. Notably, Bethesda has also included this option in Starfield, allowing players to customize their gaming experience.

As a devoted admirer, I’d relish the chance to delve deeper into Guerrilla’s captivating world without always having Aloy from Horizon in the limelight, particularly with a view from behind her shoulder. Switching to a first-person perspective could potentially enhance immersion and allow players to feel more connected to Aloy. However, it’s important to acknowledge that a first-person perspective also comes with its own set of challenges.

The Downsides of First-Person Perspective

Some players might find it familiar, given that they’ve played two popular Horizon games featuring a third-person perspective. However, it could potentially cause discomfort, especially when the camera moves shakily as Aloy walks, but luckily Guerrilla Games has previously worked with protagonist viewpoints, thanks to Call of the Mountain.

Call of the Mountain Broadens Horizon’s Horizons

The Tale of the Mountain revolves around Ryas’ journey, who aims to receive forgiveness by scaling the Sunspear. Standing out as a Virtual Reality game, it hints at potential future editions of Horizon, which may adopt a similar or identical gameplay style beyond VR.

In Horizon 3, Guerrilla could incorporate the first-person gaming experience while retaining the franchise’s established mechanics. However, to enhance the player’s experience, they should also provide an option for third-person view. This would help players manage machines more effectively, as first-person combat might feel too intense or overwhelming. If Horizon 3 allows for smooth transitions between first- and third-person perspectives, it could make the game truly remarkable.

Regardless of its gameplay perspective, it’s clear that Horizon 3 will deliver an exhilarating adventure. However, developers could elevate the experience by incorporating a first-person point of view (POV). Without this addition, other VR games might be the only way to explore such POVs within the Horizon series.
