As a seasoned gamer with decades of comic book-themed gaming under my belt, I must say that Marvel Rivals has truly caught my attention. The closed Beta was a breath of fresh air in an otherwise monotonous hero shooter landscape.

Over the past few months, there’s been quite a buzz surrounding Marvel Rivals. Following its announcement in March that sparked lots of curiosity, Marvel Rivals conducted its first closed test in May. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive after the game’s initial test, and fans couldn’t wait for another chance to try out this 6v6 hero shooting game. Recently, many fortunate fans got a taste of Marvel Rivals when it launched its limited-time closed Beta.

The buzz surrounding the closed Beta of Marvel Rivals has made the game appear even more appealing than during its Alpha phase, as many fans believe there’s a unique charm about this comic-themed multiplayer title. One standout moment in Marvel Rivals’ Beta was the unexpected introduction of two new characters midway through its run. While Thor was another strong Vanguard hero, it was Jeff the Land Shark, an unusual healer that even some devoted Marvel enthusiasts were unaware of, who truly captured fans’ attention. Jeff swiftly emerged as a star player in Marvel Rivals, demonstrating that developer NetEase should not shy away from incorporating some of Marvel’s more eccentric characters into the game.

Marvel Rivals Should Shoot for the Moon With Unconventional Character Designs

Jeff the Land Shark Proves Anything Can Work in Marvel Rivals

First introduced in the “West Coast Avengers” series in 2018, Jeff the Land Shark has since made appearances in various Marvel comics, frequently sharing the stage with characters such as Gwenpool, Deadpool, and Kate Bishop. Despite having a dedicated fanbase among Marvel comic enthusiasts, Jeff the Land Shark is generally quite obscure. Given his unique status, one might wonder how he fits into a game like “Marvel Rivals”, a hero shooter. Yet somehow, it all comes together nicely.

Due to its distinctively stylish design, the bulky four-legged shark character, Jeff the Land Shark, fits surprisingly well among the diverse cast of Marvel Rivals. The endearing character-specific movements and sounds of Jeff contribute significantly to his growing popularity and create a sense of camaraderie with the team. Additionally, his game mechanics are as well-thought-out as those of other characters in the roster, providing an effective and distinct method for healing.

Introducing an under-the-radar hero such as Jeff the Land Shark into the Marvel Rivals team expands NetEase’s creative possibilities for reinventing this character and their powers, while generating interest in a lesser-known figure. Featuring diverse characters like Jeff helps Marvel Rivals stand out from its competitors by showcasing a distinct roster that minimizes comparisons with other games.

Marvel Rivals Has Plenty of Strange Source Material to Draw Inspiration From

A smart move for Marvel Rivals might involve introducing a handful of lesser-known, quirky characters to their roster in the future, and fortunately, there are numerous eccentric comic book heroes and villains eagerly waiting for another moment in the limelight. Some obvious choices for peculiar Marvel characters include anthropomorphic animals such as Jeff. Howard the Duck, who could make a fantastic melee-focused hero with his unique Quack-Fu skills. Spider-Ham, following his memorable showing in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, would also be an excellent pick. Last but not least, Hit-Monkey, with his nimble playstyle, would be a wonderful addition too.
