Summary
- Hextech Chests return via battle pass & honor system, emphasizing engagement over skill.
- Riot acknowledges player frustration, makes rare move to address criticism.
- Riot makes adjustments beyond Hextech Chests, incl. champion cost reduction & tournament schedule.
As an ardent League of Legends fan, I can’t hide my excitement when things take a turn, especially when it comes to changes in our beloved game. The uproar was palpable when Riot Games decided to scrap Hextech Chests – chaos ensued! The community refused to accept any reasoning behind the disappearance of this intriguing feature, and after persistent resistance, it seems like Riot is reconsidering their decision.
In an update, it’s been confirmed that Hextech chests will make their return with some modifications. From Act 2 onwards in the ongoing season, players can expect to receive ten chests per act. However, these chests will now be obtainable through the Battle Pass and Honor system this time around.
Lead gameplay producer Paul “Pabro” Bellezza acknowledged that they had not fully realized how significant this issue was for you, and admitted that taking it away caused a great deal of inconvenience to many players.
Hextech Chests Are Returning—With a Catch

Starting next week, you’ll be able to acquire Hextech Chests via The Battle Pass. This pass features a free tier that offers eight chests, as well as two additional ones for those with a high honor level. However, it’s important to note that the new system focuses more on encouraging engagement and positive behavior rather than skill-based mastery.
The recent decision signifies an unusual instance of self-reflection from a studio that has primarily focused on increasing monetary gains. Riot’s other monetization adjustments, like a redesigned battle pass and securing Exalted skins within expensive bundle deals, have also faced similar criticism.
In an attempt to appear fair, Riot’s decision to eliminate free skins might lead people to believe that the company is becoming more manipulative. Quickly, fans began to recognize this change as a “half-hearted corporate move,” with some going so far as to call it “even more questionable.
In addition to Hextech Chests returning, there are other changes such as a permanent 50% decrease in the cost of Blue Essence for all champions. It seems that Riot has responded significantly to player feedback and is considering altering the monthly schedule for tournament mode. Furthermore, two popular features, Your Shop and Blue Essence Emporium, will reappear in future updates.
