As an admirer, I often notice that many developers tend to settle into a specific niche and stay there for extended periods, particularly in the AAA realm. For instance, Naughty Dog excels at narrative-driven action-adventure games, Rockstar is renowned for its expansive, meticulously detailed open-world titles, while BioWare shines in creating large-scale RPGs. However, indie studios like Sloclap don’t adhere to this pattern quite as strictly.
Indie studios like Sloclap, though they must generate enough revenue to stay afloat, aren’t bound by a major publisher or shareholders, giving them more leeway to explore ideas that truly intrigue them. The upcoming game “Rematch” from Sloclap is a shining example of this independent creativity, showcasing the vast potential this French studio holds.
The Future Looks Bright for Sloclap
Sloclap Has Already Proven Its Versatility
Initially established by ex-developers from Ubisoft Paris, Sloclap debuted with their 2017 release, the action-RPG titled “Absolver“, which showcased intense melee combats with a focus on swift responsiveness. After five years, Sloclap unveiled another game, “Sifu“, that also spotlights detailed hand-to-hand combat.
Upon examining Sloclap’s body of work, it becomes apparent that there was an organic progression from Absolver to Sifu. Sloclap made improvements to Absolver’s level design, perfected its close-combat mechanics, and infused the gameplay with even more flair, culminating in Sifu – a title whose popularity has continued to soar since its release.
Besides boasting exceptional fight sequences, the game titled “Sifu” offers a rare and captivating concept: the player’s character grows older each time they meet their demise. This distinctive premise allows the game to openly embrace its martial arts film inspirations while simultaneously carving out a unique niche for itself, which is no small feat.
Given Sloclap’s past projects, it might be expected that they would create another combat-centric action-adventure game, possibly a sequel to Sifu. However, Sloclap has other ideas. The game Rematch, slated for release on June 19, marks a significant change in gameplay and tone for Sloclap. Instead of the single-player melee action found in Absolver and Sifu, Rematch offers multiplayer soccer chaos.
As I type this, the beta phase of “Rematch” is in full flow, and while there are minor technical glitches, initial reactions are extremely positive. If “Rematch” can maintain this momentum and make a big impact in June, Sloclap will have solidified its reputation as an incredibly versatile studio, surpassing even initial expectations.
No Ideas Are Seemingly Off The Table for Sloclap
As a passionate gamer, I can’t help but marvel at the stark contrast between “Sifu” and “Rematch.” While they share the same origin, their gameplay and aesthetics are poles apart. This disparity suggests that Sloclap isn’t afraid to tread off the beaten path. If “Rematch” manages to make a splash, it would boost Sloclap’s conviction to chase their dreams instead of chasing industry fads. With such passion guiding them, who knows where they might lead us? At this moment, the future for Sloclap shines brighter than ever, and I can only imagine what wonders await in their next venture.
