After Shadow of the Erdtree, Elden Ring Fans Want One Ranni's Quest Change

Highlights

  • A number of Elden Ring fans are disappointed with the fact that Shadow of the Erdtree is completely disconnected from the base game.
  • According to some such opinions, having Ranni assist the Tarnished during the final Shadow of the Erdtree boss fight would have been an excellent move on FromSoftware’s part.

As a seasoned Elden Ring player and a devoted fan of Ranni’s enigmatic storyline, I must say I find myself in agreement with the vocal section of the fandom that’s been yearning for a more integrated questline for our beloved sorceress in Shadow of the Erdtree.

A significant group of the Elden Ring gaming community has united recently to express their disappointment over FromSoftware’s choice not to modify Ranni’s questline in Shadow of the Erdtree. While the latest expansion for Elden Ring didn’t touch the original game, certain fans argue that Ranni’s quest presented a clear opportunity for an adjustment, one that could have significantly enhanced the gameplay without requiring a massive investment of development time.

Elden Ring and Shadow of the Erdtree endgame spoilers ahead.

In many opinions, Ranni’s Age of the Stars is considered the finest conclusion for Elden Ring. To access this ending, players must embark on a complex series of quests that span the Lands Between extensively. By surmounting its numerous challenges and defeating the final boss of the main game, Ranni invites the player character to become her partner. Subsequently, they rule the Lands Between jointly, during an age where the influence of most, if not all, Outer Gods is minimized. It seems that Ranni ascends to godhood in the course of achieving her objectives.

Some Elden Ring Fans Wanted Ranni To Help With Miquella

The narrative of the latest game expansion centers on Miquella striving for a god-like status with his companion, and when players encounter Radahn’s Promised Consort, the Shadow of the Erdtree, in battle, they will find themselves battling not only Radahn but also Miquella, who appears as a spirit on his champion’s back. Unfortunately, some fans were disillusioned to discover that Ranni does not offer assistance during this fight, as suggested by Reddit user cat210803 in a recent discussion thread on r/EldenRing.

It’s not unusual to find complaints that Ranni’s questline in Elden Ring remains unchanged by Shadow of the Erdtree, as this expansion doesn’t influence any other parts of the original game. FromSoftware likely chose to create such a standalone experience to concentrate on producing more DLC content rather than diverting resources towards modifying a game that had already been completed.

In the narrative of “Shadow of the Erdtree,” it’s inconsistent for Ranni to participate in battles against Radahn and Miquella because the events depicted in the DLC occur within the timeline of the main game. The DLC should be completed after the Tarnished has vanquished the Elden Beast, but before they make decisions about the future of the Lands Between. Consequently, Ranni doesn’t attain godhood or take the protagonist as her consort within the storyline of “Shadow of the Erdtree.”

Some players are still expressing dissatisfaction because FromSoftware didn’t provide any small in-game reward for finishing Ranni’s quest, not even a simple Talisman. For instance, Reddit user _Lucille_ expressed that they would have been content with such a minor compensation, stating they wouldn’t have needed any help with boss fights.
