After Star Wars Outlaws, the Empire Era Needs to Face the Reaper for Now

After Star Wars Outlaws, the Empire Era Needs to Face the Reaper for Now

As a lifelong Star Wars fan, I’ve seen the good, the bad, and the Wookiee of this galaxy far, far away. And while I’ve enjoyed every bit of it, I must admit that I’m starting to feel a little “tired” of the Empire. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good Imperial story as much as the next guy (or droid), but it seems like we’re stuck in this era forever!

In “Star Wars Outlaws,” players have been introduced to a previously unexplored aspect of the Star Wars universe – an open-world smuggler adventure. Now, they can delve into familiar destinations, engage in galactic firefights, and immerse themselves in the chaotic underbelly of the galaxy far, far away. This unique journey, however, shares a characteristic with many recent Star Wars initiatives.

For years, the Star Wars franchise has seemingly struggled to move on from the Age of the Empire. While the sequel trilogy and The Acolyte may have explored other timelines, the majority of Star Wars projects have stuck between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, or explored another period still filled with the Empire. Even though those stories have been interesting, there is also so much more within the galaxy waiting to be explored. And Star Wars Outlaws really needs to be the end of this era, for now.

Star Wars Outlaws Needs to Be the End of the Empire

Star Wars Has Used the Empire Way Too Much

From its debut, Star Wars has consistently highlighted the struggle between the Rebellion and the Empire as a key theme. This conflict served as the foundation for the original trilogy, making it one of the most memorable periods in the science fiction series. Although the prequels and Star Wars: The Clone Wars delved into the infamous Clone Wars, after Disney’s acquisition in 2012, the franchise has largely remained focused on this era. To this day, it continues to return to this time period.

From 2012 onwards, a multitude of Star Wars productions focusing on the Empire era have been developed. The films have expanded this period for fans with movies like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Solo: A Star Wars Story. On Disney Plus, shows such as The Bad Batch, Tales of the Empire, Andor, Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and The Book of Boba Fett have delved into the Empire in diverse ways. Additionally, video games like Star Wars Battlefront, Star Wars Battlefront 2, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Star Wars Squadrons, and now Star Wars Outlaws have also touched upon this era. However, projects such as The Acolyte, Clone Wars season seven, Tales of the Jedi, and the sequel trilogy have yet to delve into the Empire.

Star Wars Has So Many Untapped Eras to Explore

It’s perfectly fine to delve into the Empire’s tales, given its captivating period in the Star Wars universe. Yet, with the arrival of Star Wars Outlaws, there appears to have been too much focus on this specific era. The galaxy is vast and full of untold stories, suggesting it might be time to uncover these hidden narratives. Whether it’s during the Clone Wars, High Republic, Old Republic, or even the Sequels, at least it will offer something fresh and new.

Looking ahead, it’s probable that we’ll see an increase in tales centered around the Empire, such as Skeleton Crew, the upcoming seasons of Andor and Ahsoka, and the third installment of Star Wars Jedi. It’s good to note that Star Wars Eclipse is rumored to be set in a different period, which we hope will inspire more projects to do the same. If the film side doesn’t, then perhaps the video game side could take the lead.

Beyond Star Wars Jedi 3, we might not see another Empire-centric game for a while, and if there is one, let’s hope Star Wars Outlaws fills that role. However, if more Empire-focused games follow, let’s hope they switch things up by exploring different storylines within the era. Even though it involves the Empire, Star Wars Outlaws focuses on the underworld, offering a refreshing change from what we’ve seen so far or will see in the future.
